Iowa Cubs Game Notes - September 1 at Nashville

September 1, 2016

TONIGHT'S GAME: Iowa goes for the series split tonight after snapping a two-game skid againt Nashville yesterday. Iowa has not dropped a series since losing seven straight June 30 - July 29 and needs a win tonight to keep that streak alive. Nashville has secured post-season berth with a 12.5 game lead over Round Rock in the American South Division. The Sounds have won 10 of their last 12 games.

ABOUT YESTERDAY: Jordan Pries pitched seven one-run innings and Iowa added 17 hits as the I-Cubs routed the Sounds 10-1. Iowa knocked 17 hits with six players tallying multi-hit efforts. It was the fourth time this season Iowa has collected 17 or more hits with the I-Cubs tabbing a season-best 19 on May 6 at Omaha and May 14 at Reno. The last time Iowa had 17 hits was April 24 at Omaha. Albert Almora Jr. went 4-for-5 for his first four-hit effort of the season and Iowa's eighth from an individual player. Jeimer Candelario also nabbed three hits for the fifth time this season.

HE'S A REGULAR: Iowa manager Marty Pevey collected his 283rd win at the helm of the club yesterday to tie Mike Quade (2003-06) for second on the I-Cubs' all-time managerial wins list. Pevey owns a career 927-904 record in 14 years of managing and is 283-287 with Iowa.

QUALITY OVER QUANITY: Jordan Pries pitched seven one-run innings last night to nab his third quality start of the season for Iowa. It was a much-needed boost for the Iowa rotation, who has only made it through five or more innings in four of its last nine starts. The I-Cubs have 13 quality starts since the All-Star break.

DIME PIECE: Iowa plated 10 runs to improve to 9-0 on the season when scoring 10 or more runs. It was the first time Iowa had managed that much offensive production since Aug. 1 against Omaha and just the second time since the All-Star break. The I-Cubs recorded seven of their 10-plus run games in April and May.

GET OUTTA HERE: Kristopher Negrón blasted Iowa's first homer of the series yesterday and the team's 100th of the season. Iowa has crushed 64 of its 100 homers in enemy territory and has homered in 12 of its last 19 road contests.

BREAK IT DOWN: Matt Murton had failed to record a hit in five games, but rebounded with a 2-for-4 game yesterday. The outfielder spent almost one month on the disabled list after colliding with a wall and was activated on Aug. 20. Murton was 2-for-2 in back-to-back pinch-hit situations following his activation but entering yesterday, had failed to record a hit since.

AGAINST NASHVILLE: Iowa has found success against the American South Champion Nashville Sounds, holding a 9-6 record in 2016. Iowa last visited Nashville May 2-5 and took three of four from the Sounds, outscoring them 15-11 on their home turf. The I-Cubs boosted their season batting average from .251 to .264 with 17 hits yesterday. Iowa also compliments it with a 3.59 team ERA -- its best mark against anyone on the American side of the PCL. Jeimer Candelario is 12-for-28 with five doubles and four RBI in seven games against Nashville. Giovanni Soto has not given up a run to the Sounds in seven innings of relief work. Iowa is 125-145 all-time vs. Nashville and is 54-80 on the road.

GOING, GOING, GONE: Kristopher Negrón muscled his ninth homer of the season yesterday, his most in a season since 2014. Negrón has 66 career minor league homers and six major league long balls. He has matched nine home runs in a season three other times (2010, 2011, 2014) and holds a career-best of 11 set in 2011 while with Triple-A Louisville and Double-A Carolina.

ODDS 'N ENDS: The 2016 Iowa Cubs have posted their names in the record book this season. The team has secured a new franchise record in sacrifice flies with 58, previously held by the 2007 team with 55. They also claim third all-time in triples (50) and second in GIPD (131). The pitching staff has moved into third on the leaderboard in strikeouts with 1151 and needs two more to over take second place.

HOT TAMALE: Jeimer Candelario snapped his 12-game hitting streak and his 31-game consecutive on-base streak on Aug. 27 against Omaha, but his bat remains hot. The 22-year-old has a hit in his last four games and in 19 of his last 21 dating back to Aug. 8. He is hitting .395 (34-for-86) over this span -- fifth best in the PCL -- with seven doubles, one triple, one homer and 20 RBI.

BOUNCE BACK: John Andreoli has rebounded from a 1-for-15 skid to hit safely in each of his last five games. The outfielder went 2-for-5 yesterday and is 6-for-21 over the hitting streak with two doubles and three walks.

SHORT HOPS: With 17 August wins, Iowa has secured its winningest month of the season ... Tim Federowicz has caught nine of the last 10 baserunners that have tried to steal on him ... John Andreoli leads the PCL with 135 games played, stolen bases (36), is second in walks with 86 and fourth in runs scored with 90 ... Armando Rivero paces PCL relievers in lowest opponent batting average (.171) and strikeouts -per-nine-innings ratio (14.12).
