Dodgers' Bellinger promoted to Triple-A

First base prospect joins Oklahoma City in advance of PCL playoffs
September 3, 2016

Heading into the Pacific Coast League playoffs, Triple-A Oklahoma City lost fireballer Jose De Leon to a Major League promotion, but reinforcements already have arrived.

The Dodgers, who begin a best-of-5 semifinal series against Nashville on Wednesday, added top Los Angeles prospect Cody Bellinger, No. 17 prospect and Texas League Pitcher of the Year Chase De Jong and right-handed reliever Joe Broussard from Double-A Tulsa on Saturday.

Although Bellinger wasn't in the starting lineup for Saturday's 3-0 victory at Omaha, he made his presence felt. The 23-year-old first baseman and corner outfielder replaced Shawn Zarraga at first in the fifth inning, walked in the seventh, then smacked an RBI single up the middle on the first pitch he saw from reliever Nick Tepesch in the ninth.

MLB.com's No. 34 overall prospect batted .263/.358/.484 with 23 homers and 65 RBIs in 114 Texas League games, a year after the 2013 fourth-round pick led the organization with 30 homers for Class A Advanced Rancho Cucamonga.

De Jong, a 22-year-old right-hander whom the Dodgers acquired with Tim Locastro from the Blue Jays for three international signing pool slots last July 2, led the Texas League with 14 wins, was second with a 2.86 ERA and fourth with 125 strikeouts. He last pitched on Monday when he spun six scoreless innings at Springfield.

Like Bellinger, Broussard -- a 2014 15th-rounder -- was quick to establish himself in the PCL. He recorded the save Saturday by striking out one in a scoreless ninth. The 25-year-old LSU product was 1-0 with a 1.38 ERA and one save in 28 appearances for Rancho Cucamonga and 3-2 with a 1.93 ERA and seven saves in 33 games with Tulsa this season.
