Iowa Cruises to 5-1 Win Over Colorado Springs
DES MOINES, IA - Jeimer Candelario went 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI to lift the Iowa Cubs (65-76) over the Colorado Springs Sky Sox (67-69) 5-1, Saturday at Principal Park.
All the scoring in the game took place in the first three innings. Candelario ignited Iowa with a base-hit in the second and later scored on a bloop-single to right field from Taylor Davis. Another run scored on a double steal executed by Juan Perez and Davis.
Colorado Springs grabbed a run on a no-out, double-play ball in the third but it didn't derail Iowa as the home team added three runs in the bottom of the frame. John Andreoli and Lane Adams opened the inning with consecutive singles, both stole a bag and Albert Almora Jr. brought in the first run with a sacrifice fly. Candelario punched an RBI double and Perez an RBI single to put the I-Cubs in front 5-1.
Both teams were quieted offensively as the pitching took over. Josh Collmenter (1-0) exited after five, allowing one run on six hits and one walk while striking out three to earn the win. Armando Rivero got the ball in the sixth and contributed 2.2 one-hit innings.
On the Sky Sox side, starter Wei-Chung Wang (1-3) was tagged with all five of Iowa's runs and took the loss. Tim Dillard reversed Colorado Springs luck on the mound with 2.1 shutout frames, but the Sky Sox couldn't catch up offensively.
Corey Black took over in the eighth and a scoreless 1.1 innings from the righty secured the Iowa victory.
