German Marquez Named Pitcher of the Year

Portland, ME - The Eastern League of Professional Baseball is pleased to announce that Hartford Yard Goats right-handed starting pitcher German Marquez has been selected as the 2016 Eastern League Pitcher of the Year. Marquez made his Double-A debut for the Yard Goats on April 9th against Richmond and went on to put together a record of 9-6 with 126 strikeouts and a 2.85 ERA in 21 starts with Hartford this season. He gave up two earned runs or less in 14 of his 21 starts for the Yard Goats this season and struck out seven batters or more 10 different times. That included two starts in which Marquez carried a no-hitter in the eighth inning, the first on May 8th at Harrisburg and the second on July 28th at Harrisburg. The 21-year old was rewarded for his performance for the Yard Goats with a promotion to the Triple-A Albuquerque Isotopes on August 10th. German had a record of 2-0 with 29 strikeouts and a 4.35 ERA in five starts with the Isotopes. At the time of his promotion Marquez, who is a native of San Felix, Venezuela, was leading all Eastern League pitchers in strikeouts (126) and innings pitched (135.2). He was also ranked among the league leaders in ERA (2.85-2nd), WHIP (1.16-2nd), batting average against (.245-4th) and wins (9-tied 4th).

In addition to winning this award, the 6'1", 185 lb. hurler was also selected as the right-handed starting pitcher on the Eastern League All-Star Team, was a member of the Eastern Division roster for the Eastern League All-Star Game in Akron and was the winner of the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week Award for the period of May 2nd-May 8th.

German, who is rated by MLB.com as the sixth best prospect in the Colorado organization, was acquired by the Colorado Rockies in a trade from the Tampa Bay Rays on January 28, 2016. He was originally signed by Tampa Bay on July 2, 2011.

Richmond right-handed starter Tyler Beede finished second in the voting for the award and Harrisburg right-handed starter Tyler Mapes finished in third place. This award was voted on by Eastern League managers and coaches and members of the media.
