A Letter from Team President, Greg Coleman
Dear SeaWolves Fans,
On behalf of the SeaWolves front office and team owner Fernando Aguirre, I'd like to thank you for your continued support. We are fortunate to have a loyal base of fans and business partners, and it's been our honor to provide the Erie community with affordable family fun for the past 22 seasons.
The SeaWolves finished the 2016 season in fourth place with a 62-79 record under third-year manager Lance Parrish. While we would've liked to win more games in 2016, the team finished strong with 10 wins in its final 15 games and took on the role of spoiler in the Eastern League playoff race.
There were several notable accomplishments this season. Before his promotion to Toledo, reliever Joe Jimenez closed 12 of 13 save opportunities and represented the SeaWolves at the 2016 MLB All-Star Futures Game. Tommy Collier, Jason Krizan, Connor Harrell, and Corey Jones were named to the 2016 Eastern League All-Star Game in Akron, Ohio. In an electric performance, Krizan outslugged the top home run leaders in Double-A baseball to win the 2016 Eastern League Home Run Derby.
Josh Turley finished the season just one victory shy of tying the franchise record (24) for career wins by a SeaWolves pitcher. Dean Green was on his way to smashing the SeaWolves' single-season RBI mark before his June promotion to Toledo. Green finished the year with 108 RBI between Erie and Toledo, three more than the SeaWolves record of 105 set by Steven Moya in 2014.
The SeaWolves continued to send a steady supply of players to the big leagues. 2015 Eastern League Pitcher of the Year Michael Fulmer earned a victory in his Major League debut on April 29. In his sensational rookie season with the Tigers, he's been among the American League's leaders in ERA. JaCoby Jones, Warwick Saupold, and Joe Mantiply each made their Major League debuts with the Tigers as well. Two other former SeaWolves pitchers, Jake Thompson (2014) and Chad Green (2015), made it to "The Show" with the Phillies and Yankees respectively.
Off the field, the team finalized a new stadium lease through the 2020 season. The SeaWolves also surpassed 200,000 fans in attendance for the 13th consecutive season. The final tally of 210,040 fans marked the team's best finish at the gate since 2011. The 3.1% increase over 2015 was the highest of any Eastern League team.
Fans watched as Daniel Norris made the first rehabilitation start by a Detroit Tigers player in Erie since 2009. The Cowboy Monkey Rodeo captured the imagination and hearts of fans young and old. The ballpark also hosted a wide variety of non-baseball events including Movie Nights, Relay for Life, Zumbathon, the City-County All-Star Game, and an Erie Downtown Partnership Block Party to name a few.
The team continued its award-wining track record of community support in 2016. Between in-stadium fundraising and in-kind gifts, the SeaWolves made contributions valued at over $250,000 to local organizations. UPMC Health Plan Paint the Park Pink Weekend raised $8,000 for the Regional Cancer Center and was named a June finalist for Minor League Baseball Promotion of the Month. The SeaWolves also raised over $7,000 to kick off a fundraising campaign to build a synthetic Miracle League field in Erie.
We're already hard at work crafting the ballpark fun you'll experience next season. Please visit seawolves.com frequently this offseason and follow the team on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat for the latest updates. Thank you again for your support during the 2016 season. We look forward to seeing you at the ballpark soon.
All the best,
Greg
