Jacobo, Arenas Ace Hooks
CORPUS CHRISTI - Gabe Jacobo homered twice and Orangel Arenas pitched seven shutout innings as Arkansas blanked Corpus Christi 8-0 Saturday night before 6,288.
The Hooks are 19-35 and have dropped nine of their last 11. The Travelers stand 24-25 and snapped a three-game losing streak.
Arenas (6-2) threw 91 pitches, yielded seven hits, walked one and fanned two. He was followed by Christian Scholl and Ryan Brasier, each working a scoreless frame.
Jacobo staked Arkansas and Arenas to a 1-0 second-inning lead. Jacobo deposited his first home run - a 1-0 offering from Dallas Keuchel - in the Corpus Christi bullpen.
Keuchel (3-5) left a first-pitch fastball over the plate and Jacobo blasted it over the Goodwill Zone for a 3-0 advantage in the fourth. Ryan Mount's one-out single up the middle set the stage for Jacobo's second yard shot.
Arkansas continued to separate during the fifth, Luis Jimenez chipping in with an RBI single and scoring from first on Mount's double to the gap in left-center.
Keuchel, who didn't come out for the sixth, was charged with seven hits. He walked two and struck out two.
Mount's third hit and second run-scoring two-bagger of the evening highlighted the seventh as the Arkansas lead bulged to 7-0. Darwin Perez collected the other RBI off Matt Nevarez.
Corpus Christi left the bases loaded in the seventh, despite a one-out double from Jimmy VanOstrand.
Hooks reliever Blake King left the bases loaded in the eighth, but not before walking in run No. 8. He issued three free passes during the frame.
Corpus Christi's Jacob Goebbert extended his hitting streak to six games with a second-inning single.
The Hooks send Erick Abreu (1-0) to the mound Sunday at 6:05 vs. left-hander Andrew Taylor (2-2). All fans pick up a 2011 Hooks team photo, courtesy of the Corpus Christi Caller-Times.
