Blue Jays off and running at MLB Draft
Toronto General Manager Alex Anthopoulos had the 21st overall selection in the draft and wasted little time after Colorado had made their selection a slot ahead by grabbing Tyler Beede out of Lawrence Academy (HS).
According to MLB.com, the High School blue chipper might be the top mechanical pitcher in this year's draft. At 6'4", the right-handed pitcher has a clean, effortless delivery with the ball coming out of his hand very well.
Beede throws 92-93MPH, sitting comfortably at 91-92MPH and it comes with good late life.
Add into the mix a hard, nasty breaking ball, which is a combination of a slider and a curve, Beede has a feel for a change up as well. The good news? He's got above average command of all three pitches.
One scout suggests that he pitches like an advance college arm and might be tough to sign as he has committed to NCAA powerhouse Vanderbilt for the fall.
If Alex Anthopoulos' track record in 2010 was any indication of how the Jays value their top end talent coming out of the draft, Beede might still find his way into the Blue Jays stable before everything is said and done.
Anthopoulos came out and locked up a majority of his prospects up early and also threw his hat in the ring for some key free agent signings out of Latin America showing he is ready to build any way he can to compete in the American League East.
The Jays have seven, count 'em, seven picks in the top 80 in this year's draft, so go to MLB.com for all the latest info on which future Blue Jays could be making a stop here in Vancouver in just a few days.
