Round Rock Captures Pacific Coast League Attendance Title
ROUND ROCK, Texas - The Round Rock Express are back atop the Pacific Coast League attendance leaderboard for the first time since the 2012 season. A total of 613,226 fans made their way to Dell Diamond in 2016, a mark that edged out the Sacramento River Cats, who posted a final attendance of 609,666. The Express and River Cats were the only two PCL franchises to surpass 600,000 fans this season.
With a total of 71 home games, Round Rock averaged 8,637 fans per night, the team's highest per-game average since 2009. This season also marks the third time the Express have led the Pacific Coast League in attendance since joining the ranks of Triple-A in 2005. The E-Train previously topped the PCL attendance charts in 2011 and 2012.
Four of the top 10 most-attended games in Dell Diamond history came in 2016. The 13,212 fans that packed the stadium on Opening Day represent the third-highest attendance in franchise history, and the highest without a Major League rehabber on the roster. Less than a month later, a crowd of 13,194 witnessed Texas Rangers RHP Yu Darvish make his Dell Diamond debut, the fourth-largest gathering ever at the venue. Fan Appreciation Night brought the sixth-largest crowd in stadium history at 12,971. Finally, a July 3 attendance of 12,871 ranks ninth on the list.
The Express finished third in total attendance in all of Triple-A Baseball, trailing the Indianapolis Indians (636,888) and Charlotte Knights (628,173). They were fifth overall in average attendance behind Charlotte (8,974), Indianapolis (8,970), Columbus Clippers (8,855) and Lehigh Valley IronPigs (8,729).
Dating back to the team's time in the Texas League as the Double-A affiliate of the Houston Astros, the Round Rock Express has finished in the top three in their league's attendance standings in each of the franchise's 17 years of operations, finishing in the top two in 16 of those years.
The 16-team Pacific Coast League led all 15 Minor League Baseball leagues with a total 2016 regular season attendance of 7,063,852.
The Express will open their 18th season on Thursday, April 6, 2017 against the Nashville Sounds.
