Northwest League Report

Recap for the week ending August 7
August 8, 2005
East Division

Spokane Indians (Texas Rangers)
(Last 10: 4-6 Overall: 20-26)
Lizahio Baez started a ninth-inning rally with a double to catapult the Indians to a 2-1 victory Thursday over Vancouver, who has the best record in the Northwest League. Spokane suffered a tough loss at the hands of the Canadians the night before, yielding two runs in the ninth and one in the 10th to lose 5-4.

Boise Hawks (Chicago Cubs)
(Last 10: 3-7 Overall: 20-26)
The Hawks saw way too much of Salem-Keizer last week, losing all five of their meetings with the Volcanoes. The Hawks suffered a tough loss Wednesday when they lost 4-3 in 11 innings to Salem-Keizer. Kyle Reynolds hit his third homer in the top of the 11th, but Boise gave up two runs in the bottom half to drop the decision. Despite these setbacks, it is tied for first in the East after snapping its five-game losing streak by defeating Spokane on Sunday.

Tri-City Dust Devils (Colorado Rockies)
(Last 10: 2-8 Overall: 19-27)
Phillip Cuadrado hit a three-run homer as part of a four-run first inning for the Dust Devils in their 6-4 win over Eugene on Wednesday. In the win, the Dust Devils banged out 18 hits as six different players posted multi-hit games.

Yakima Bears (Arizona Diamondbacks)
(Last 10: 4-6 Overall: 19-27)
The Bears ended a tough week (2-4) on a positive note by defeating Tri-City 3-1 in 12 innings on Sunday. With the win, all four teams in the East are separated by just one game in the standings. Late-round pick Jason Urquidez made his first two appearances of his career. He struck out three and didn't give up any earned runs in two innings.

West Division

Vancouver Canadians (Oakland Athletics)
(Last 10: 6-4 Overall: 30-16)
Michael Madsen continued his dominance for the Canadians, tossing eight shutout innings in a 2-0 victory over Spokane on Friday. Madsen is second in the League with a 1.15 ERA. In the victory, Brian Kilby notched his ninth save, second in the league.

Salem-Keizer Volcanoes (San Francisco Giants)
(Last 10: 7-3 Overall: 28-18)
The Volcanoes continued their charge toward first-place Vancouver, but the Canadians snapped Salem-Keizer's seven-game winning streak with a 9-5 win Sunday. The Volcanoes now trail in the West standings by two games. Sergio Romo threw six shutout innings Friday to lower his league-leading ERA to 1.10 and improve his record to 5-0.

Everett AquaSox (Seattle Mariners)
(Last 10: 8-2 Overall: 26-20)
Robert Rohrbaugh threw six shutout innings and every one of them was needed as the AquaSox eked out a 1-0 victory over Eugene on Sunday. In the fifth, Luis Valbuena supplied the lone run with a solo homer, his sixth of the year.

Eugene Emeralds (San Diego Padres)
(Last 10: 6-4 Overall: 22-24)
Despite Sunday's loss to Everett, the Emeralds are hoping to be the last team in the West to move above the .500 mark. Eugene was 4-2 for the week, and Nicholas Hundley hit his sixth home run -- good for third in the league -- in the Emeralds' 4-3 victory over Tri-City on Saturday.
