Zimmerman sharp with bat and glove

Rehabbing third baseman collects RBI, two hits for P-Nats
June 10, 2011
Ryan Zimmerman appears to be fully recovered from the left abdominal strain that kept him off the baseball diamond for almost two months.

The Nationals' All-Star third baseman went 2-for-4 with an RBI double and also proved sharp in the field Thursday, leading Class A Advanced Potomac to a 3-1 win over Frederick.

With the P-Nats down in the bottom of the fourth, 1-0, Zimmerman overcame a strong wind blowing in and belted a double off the right-field wall to score Jeff Kobernus and tie the game.

The 2009 Gold Glove winner went on to display his prowess at the hot corner in the top of the fifth, when he fielded a sacrifice bunt from speedy second baseman Bobby Stevens and threw him out at first. The play proved important, as Potomac starter Daniel Rosenbaum induced an infield popup from Jonathan Schoop and struck out Kipp Schutz to escape the inning unscathed.

Zimmerman led off the eighth with a line-drive single to left field, but was stranded at third at the end of the frame.

Overall, Zimmerman is hitting .500 (6-for-12) in four rehab games -- one with Class A Hagerstown and the last three with Potomac. He has recorded three doubles, a triple and two RBIs, striking out only once.

Zimmerman has played in only eight games with the big league club this season, last appearing with the Nationals on April 9. After trying to recover from his abdominal strain with rest, he underwent surgery May 3.

Rosenbaum (4-3) earned the win for Potomac, spreading nine hits over seven innings of one-run ball. His 2.50 ERA ranks sixth in the Carolina League.

Frederick's Oliver Drake (4-3) pitched the first complete game of his career, but was saddled with the loss after surrendering three runs -- one earned -- over eight innings.

The game marked the P-Nats' first win in their last 10 home games, as well as the end of the Keys' eight-game winning streak.
