Homer Bailey to Rehab at Coca-Cola Park

June 11, 2011
Cincinnati Reds RHP Homer Bailey, recovering from a strained posterior capsule in his right shoulder that has sidelined the starter since May 28, will begin a Major League rehab assignment when the Lehigh Valley IronPigs host Cincinnati's Triple-A affiliate, the Louisville Bats, tonight at 6:35 p.m. Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Network is the exclusive sponsor of all Major League rehabilitation appearances at Coca-Cola Park.

Tickets for all upcoming IronPigs games can be purchased in-person at Coca-Cola Park, by calling (610) 841-PIGS or online at ironpigsbaseball.com. Despite leading all of Minor League Baseball in average attendance in 2010 with 9,227 fans per game, prices for single-game tickets remain identical for the fourth consecutive season and start as low as $6 for General Admission, granting fans access to the Capital BlueCross Lawn seating area and standing room only areas. Field Level reserved seats are just $9.

Bailey, 25, was placed on the 15-day disabled list back on May 28 after leaving a game against Philadelphia on May 26 in which he allowed four runs in four innings in a Reds 10-4 loss. This is Bailey's second stint on the D.L. this season after a shoulder impingement sidelined him for the first five weeks of the year. Bailey is 3-1 with a 3.00 ERA in five starts for the Reds in 2011.

He missed nearly three months last season with inflammation in his right shoulder but still managed to go 4-3 with a 4.46 ERA in 19 starts. Since making his Major League debut in 2007, Bailey has gone 19-17 with a 4.90 ERA in 61 regular season starts for the Reds. He also made his first Major League relief appearance in Game 3 of the 2010 National League Division Series against the Phillies, working two scoreless innings in the 2-0 loss.

As a highly-prized Reds prospect, Baseball America tabbed Bailey as the Reds top prospect for three consecutive seasons from 2005 through 2007. In 2006, he received the Sheldon "Chief" Bender award as the Reds organization's Minor League Player of the Year after going 10-6 with a 2.47 between two levels.

Bailey was selected seventh overall by Cincinnati in the 2004 draft following a well-recognized prep career at La Grange (TX) High School where he went a remarkable 41-4 with a 0.98 ERA and registered 536 strikeouts in 298.0 innings. Interestingly, Bailey's given first name is actually David but is called Homer after his great-grandfather.

The AT&T Plaza gates will open early on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. as the IronPigs begin a four-game series with Cincinnati's Triple-A affiliate, the Louisville Bats. Come hungry and thirsty and enjoy food and drink specials while listening to live music and watching batting practice from the AT&T Plaza.

Also on Saturday, the IronPigs will wear Twitter-inspired jerseys presented by Waste Management to celebrate the inaugural Social Media night at Coca-Cola Park. The special jerseys will be auctioned off at the conclusion of Saturday's game against Louisville with the proceeds benefitting the Project of Easton and IronPigs Charities.

Additional highlights of the first-ever Social Media night at Coca-Cola Park include:

  • The opportunity for every fan in attendance to "Run the Bases" immediately following the game should the IronPigs reach a certain number (TBD) of Twitter and Facebook followers by the end of the game (weather permitting)
  • Select tweets mentioning the #ironpigs will be featured throughout the game a one-of-a-kind "live tweets" scroll bar on Coca-Cola Park's expansive video board.
  • Contestants for Coca-Cola Park's on-field contests will be chosen by "tweeting" their seat location.
  • The first-ever 7th-inning Tweet!
  • Many additional in-park surprises!
All Saturday home games at Coca-Cola Park have a 6:35 p.m. start time and Club Gates will open for Club Level patrons beginning at 5 p.m.
