Suns Top Biscuits in Ten Innings 6-5
MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Jacksonville Suns (33-29) ended their three-game losing streak with a 6-5 win over the Montgomery Biscuits (28-34) in 10 innings at Riverwalk Stadium on Friday night.
The win combined with the Mobile BayBears' 6-2 loss to the Birmingham Barons allows the Suns to gain a game in the standings, as the Suns are now three games out of first with still eight games left to play in the first half.
Kyle Skipworth delivered the game-winning hit for the Suns in the tenth, as he hit an RBI double that scored Tim Torres to give Jacksonville a 6-5 lead. Sandy Rosario pitched a perfect bottom of the tenth to earn his Southern League-leading 16th save to preserve the one run win.
After Montgomery gained a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second, the Suns took their first lead of the series with a top of the third inning grand slam home run by Luke Montz to go on top 4-2. It was the second grand slam of the year for the Suns and the thirteenth homer of the year for Montz, which is good for second-best in the league.
The Biscuits added a run in the bottom of the third before Kevin Mattison brought home Skipworth on a fielder's choice play to give the Suns a 5-3 lead. The Suns kept the two-run advantage until the bottom of the sixth, when back-to-back RBI doubles by Montgomery's Matt Sweeney and Reid Fronk tied the game.
Jacksonville starter Omar Poveda finished the night with a no decision, as he pitched five and two thirds innings while giving up five runs on seven hits. The Suns bullpen was solid late in the game, as Peter Andrelczyk, Dan Jennings, and Jhan Marinez (2-4) did not allow any runs from the seventh to the ninth. Marinez earned his second win of the year by pitching a scoreless ninth. Frank De Los Santos (0-5) took the loss for Montgomery after giving up the double to Skipworth in the tenth.
The Suns and Biscuits will play the third game of the series on Saturday night at Riverwalk Stadium. The Suns will start right-hander Dallas Trahern (1-1, 4.35 ERA) while the Biscuits will start right-hander Chris Archer (2-3, 5.68 ERA). First pitch is set for 8:05 p.m. ET, and fans can listen to the game beginning at 7:50 p.m. on with the U.F. & Shands Pregame Show on Jacksonville's WFXJ AM 930 the Fox and www.jaxsuns.com.
