Goldschmidt tops Home Run Derby list

Minors' current longball leader will battle seven SL All-Stars

JACKSON, TENN. -- The Jackson Generals announced today that eight Southern League All-Star players have committed to participate in the 2011 Home Run Derby, presented by State Farm. The Home Run Derby will begin at 6 p.m. on Monday, June 20, and will be followed by the Long Haul Bombers Exhibition. The Derby features the top sluggers from the league competing for the crown of Home Run Derby champion. In the first round, each contestant will have eight outs, then six outs in all following rounds until a champion is crowned.

The North Division will feature Jake Shaffer of the Jackson Generals, Matt Spencer of the Tennessee Smokies, Kyle Russell of the Chattanooga Lookouts and Ryan Flaherty of the Tennessee Smokies. The South Division participants are Luke Montz of the Jacksonville Suns, Steven Vogt of the Montgomery Biscuits, Paul Goldschmidt of the Mobile BayBears and Christian Marrero of the Birmingham Barons.

OF Jake Shaffer -- (Jackson Generals/Seattle Mariners) is currently tied for 10th in the Southern League with nine home runs, 11th in batting (.313), second in at-bats (262), second in hits (82) and third in total bases (133). Shaffer has played in 60 games this season. Shaffer attended Northern Kentucky and was drafted by the Mariners in the 15th round in 2008. He resides in Cincinnati.

OF Matt Spencer -- (Tennessee Smokies/Chicago Cubs) is currently tied for sixth in the league with 10 home runs this season, ninth in RBIs (40), sixth in slugging percentage (.552) and seventh in OPS (.922). Spencer carries a .292 batting average in 59 games. Spencer attended Arizona State University and was originally drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the third round (113th overall) in 2007. He was born in Morristown, Tenn.

OF Kyle Russell -- (Chattanooga Lookouts/Los Angeles Dodgers) is currently tied for second in the league with 13 home runs, second in extra-base hits (36), fourth in slugging percentage (.567), tied for 10th in RBIs (39) and eighth in OPS (.914). Russell has a .281 batting average in 63 games. Russell attended the University of Texas and was drafted by the Dodgers in the third round (93rd overall in 2008. He was born in Houston.

UTIL Ryan Flaherty -- (Tennessee Smokies/Chicago Cubs) is fourth in the league in homers with 13, third in RBIs (53), fifth in slugging percentage (.565), ninth in runs scored (41) and fourth in OPS (.945). Flaherty is batting .301 in 59 games this season, starting 29 at second base, three at third base, 12 at shortstop and 26 in the outfield. Flaherty attended Vanderbilt University and was drafted by the Cubs in Compensation First round (41st overall) in 2008. He was born in Portland, Maine.

C Luke Montz -- (Jacksonville Suns/Florida Marlins) is tied for second in the league in home runs with 13 on the year, second in slugging percentage (.604), second in OPS (.999) and 12th in RBIs (38). Montz is batting .302 in 49 games this season. Montz attended Hill Junior College (Texas) and was originally selected by the Washington Nationals in the 17th round of the 2003 Draft. He was born in Lafayette, La.

C Steven Vogt -- (Montgomery Biscuits/Tampa Bay Rays) is tied for 10th in the league with nine home runs this season, second in RBIs (57), fourth in at-bats (249), fifth in total bases (124) and tied for sixth in hits (76). Vogt is batting .305 in 61 games this season, 26 starts in the outfield, 26 at catcher and three at first base. Vogt attended Azusa Pacific and was drafted by the Rays in the 12th round (365 overall) in 2007. He was born in Visalia, Calif.

1B Paul Goldschmidt -- (Mobile BayBears/Arizona Diamondbacks) is first in the Southern League and Minor League Baseball with 21 home runs. He is third in batting average (.343), first in RBIs (59), fourth in hits (79), first in on-base percentage (.465), first in slugging percentage (.687), first in runs scored (54), first in extra-base hits (36), first in total bases (158), first in OPS (1.152) and tied for first in games played (64). Goldschmidt attended Texas State University and was drafted by the D-backs in the eighth round (246 overall) in 2009. Goldschmidt was born in Wilmington, Del.

OF Christian Marrero -- (Birmingham Barons/Chicago White Sox) is tied for fifth in the league with 10 home runs this season, third in slugging percentage (.575), second in total bases (138), third in extra-base hits (34), third in triples (8), tied for 10th in RBIs (39) and ninth in batting average (.317). Marrero has played in 63 games this season, 41 starts in the outfield and 19 at first base. Marrero attended Broward Community College (Fla.) and was signed as a non-drafted free agent by the White Sox in 2006.
