Indians Staff Returns to Forest Manor Park for Indy Do Day
INDIANAPOLIS - The Indianapolis Indians' front office staff will roll up their sleeves to once again participate in the annual Indy Do Day on Wednesday, October 5. Led by award-winning head groundskeeper, Joey Stevenson, it is the staff's goal to revamp and breathe new life into some of the baseball and softball fields at Forest Manor Park on the city's east side.
Utilized by Play Ball Indiana (PBI), the local chapter of Major League Baseball's RBI Program (Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities), the fields will receive a makeover for the second year at the hands of Indians staff members. Mike Lennox, executive director of PBI, has seen much success in the organization's involvement.
"Every year the Indians take a day to do a total makeover of one or two of our ball diamonds, and each year our RBI kids are so excited to be able to play on the diamonds the next day," said Lennox. "We are so thankful to the Indians for this huge gift of time and effort."
Activities throughout the day of service will include rebuilding pitching mounds, lining fields, and repairing bleachers, to name a few. All materials are donated by the Indians and a handful of Indians' vendors.
The main mission of PBI is to generate interest among inner city children in baseball and softball while fostering academic achievement. According to PBI's mission, they set out "…to give every youth who wants to play baseball the opportunity to do so", which includes a fundamental element: playable fields.
