Mets' Kay undergoes Tommy John surgery

'16 first-rounder, No. 9 prospect, expected to miss entire 2017 season
October 4, 2016

Another Mets pitcher has gone under the knife.

Anthony Kay -- the 31st overall pick in this year's Draft and the club's ninth-ranked prospect -- underwent Tommy John surgery on Tuesday and will miss the entire 2017 season, the team announced.

Kay did not pitch after the Mets drafted him in June out of the University of Connecticut and gave him a below-slot value $1.1 million bonus. The 21-year-old was dealing with concerns about his elbow at the time of the Draft.

When healthy, Kay boasts a fastball that can touch 95 mph, an effective changeup and above-average control. As a junior at UConn, he went 9-2 with a 2.65 ERA and 111 strikeouts against 37 walks over 119 innings. The 6-foot, 190-pound Long Island native is the Huskies' all-time leader with 263 strikeouts in three seasons.

Kay has been compared by scouts to left-hander Mark Buerhle, who recorded 214 wins in a 16-year Major League career with the White Sox, Marlins and Blue Jays.
