Diamond Jaxx Take Series Opener From Suns

Jacksonville, Fla. - On a rainy Tuesday night at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx scored three runs off of Jacksonville Suns relief pitching and held on for a 3-1 victory.
The win improved West Tenn's record to 2-4 while the loss dropped Jacksonville's early-season mark to 3-3.
The Suns opened the scoring in the third off of Diamond Jaxx starter Jason Mackintosh when Anthony Raglani connected on a leadoff homerun into the right field bleachers to make it 1-0.
That lead seemed comfortable as Jacksonville starting pitcher Scott Elbert pitched five no-hit innings with two walks and nine strikeouts before leaving the 1-0 game to reliever Brian Akin.
After Akin induced a groundout followed by a walk from Brent Johnson to begin the inning, Erick Monzon crushed a triple to left-centerfield that scored Johnson and tied the game at 1-1. Monzon next scored on a Jeff Frazier sacrifice fly that gave the Diamond Jaxx a 2-1 advantage.
West Tenn added to their lead in the seventh inning when Rene Rivera grounded out with the bases loaded to score Matt Tuiasosopo to finish the scoring at 3-1.
The Jacksonville offense could only muster two baserunners in the final four innings of the game off of West Tenn relievers Aaron Trolia and Craig James, one on a walk and the other on a hit by pitch.
Trolia (1-0) picked up the relief win after three and two-thirds innings, in which he allowed two hits and one walk with two strikeouts. Brian Akin (0-1) fell in the loss after two and two-thirds innings of work in which he gave up all three West Tenn runs. Craig James picked up his first save of the season.
The Diamond Jaxx and Suns meet in the second game of the series Wednesday at 1:05 p.m. RH William Juarez (1-0, 0.00) gets the start for Jacksonville while West Tenn counters with RH Andy Baldwin (0-0, 4.50).
