Win Streak Ends With 10-1 Loss To Modesto

Nuts End San Jose's Record Tying Win Streak At 12 Games
June 17, 2011
SAN JOSE - The San Jose Giants saw their team-record tying win streak end at 12 games with a 10-1 blowout loss to the Modesto Nuts on Friday evening at Municipal Stadium. The Nuts jumped out to a 7-0 lead after 4 1/2 innings en route to handing the Giants their worst defeat of the season. The loss drops San Jose's overall record to 49-18. The Giants now need to win their final three games of the first half to set a team record for most wins in a half.

San Jose starter Kelvin Marte (5-4) was roughed up for seven runs (six earned) on nine hits over five innings to take the loss. Marte, who at one point allowed six consecutive hits in the top of the second inning, walked none and struck out none.

The only Giants run of the evening came in the bottom of the fifth inning on Alex Burg's solo home run. Gary Brown (2-for-4) was the lone San Jose player to finish with a multi-hit game. The Nuts out-hit the Giants by a 15-7 margin.

Modesto took the early lead with four runs in the top of the second inning against Marte. Consecutive singles from Kiel Roling and Nolan Arenado started the frame before Roling was thrown out at third base attempting to steal. Kent Matthes followed with a double off the fence in deep center to plate Arenado with the first run of the game. Angelys Nina then singled home the second run before he was thrown out at second trying to advance on a pitch in the dirt from Marte. After Jose Gonzalez singled, David Christensen stepped to the plate and delivered the sixth straight hit as he tripled to deep right center to score another run. Christensen later came home on a wild pitch to make it 4-0.

Marte recovered to set down six consecutive Nuts hitters over the third and fourth innings before running into more trouble in the top of the fifth. Christensen led off by getting hit by a pitch before Delta Cleary, Jr. dropped down a sacrifice bunt. However on the play, the third baseman Burg threw wildly to first for an error allowing Cleary, Jr. to reach safely. Josh Rutledge then bounced into a fielder's choice for the first out before Mike Zuanich crushed a three-run homer to deep left center field. The home run, Zuanich's team-leading 13th of the season, extended the Modesto lead to 7-0.

Nuts starter Parker Frazier pitched around a pair of singles in the bottom of the first before tossing 1-2-3 second and third innings. Jarrett Parker led off the fourth with a double, but advanced no further after Frazier set down the next three batters. Finally in the fifth, the Giants broke through as Burg smacked a one-out solo homer down the left field line to bring San Jose to within 7-1.

Jose Valdez (1 2/3 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 1 SO) relieved Marte to begin the top of the sixth and struggled as Modesto continued to add to their lead. In the sixth, Gonzalez walked with two outs before Christensen singled and then Cleary, Jr. came through with an RBI single. Then in the seventh, Rutledge led off with a single before consecutive walks to Zuanich and Roling loaded the bases with no outs. After Arenado struck out, Matthes grounded into a fielder's choice to score one run before Nina's two-out RBI single made it 10-1.

Frazier (4-6) earned the win after tossing a season-high seven innings with one run and seven hits allowed. He struck out three and walked none. San Jose's last hit of the game was Ryan Cavan's one-out single in the bottom of the sixth. Nuts relievers Kurt Yacko and Sheng-An Kuo held the Giants off the scoreboard in the eighth and ninth innings respectively.
