Wings fall short in game one

Four-run sixth boosts Indians
June 18, 2011
The Indianapolis Indians scored four runs in the sixth inning and hung on for a 7-5 win over the Red Wings Saturday afternoon at Frontier Field, in the first game of a day/night doubleheader.

Eric Hacker started against the club he made 21 starts for in 2009, and struck out leadoff hitter Chase d'Arnaud. But a hit batter, walk and throwing error put runners at second and third for Indianpolis. Andy Marte delivered a two-out, two-run double to stake the Indians to an early 2-0 lead.

The Red Wings came right back to tie the score in their half of the first inning. Dustin Martin doubled off the wall in right field against starter Brian Burres, and Trevor Plouffe followed with a homer that just cleared the centerfield wall to make it 2-2. It was Plouffe's team-leading seventh home run this season.

In the top of the second inning Hacker settled down pitching a 1-2-3 inning, grounding out two and striking out one.

Chase Lambin started the second inning off for the Wings with a single but was picked off trying to steal second base. With two outs Steve Holm worked a walk and Martin hit a single. Plouffe walked, loading the bases and creating a scoring threat that ended abruptly with Brian Dinkelman grounding out.

Hacker gave up a lead off double in the fourth to Marte who advanced to third on the throw. Marte scored giving the Indians a 3-2 lead on a sacrifice fly by Matt Hague. Hacker recovered, retiring the next to batters to end the ining.

Plouffe earned his fifth double of the season leading off the fifth inning for Rochester. He advanced to third on a Dinkelman single. With men on the corners Jeff Bailey singled, scoring Plouffe to tie the game. Mike Hollimon followed with a single, loading the bases. Chris Leroux came on in relief of Burres with one out. Leroux struck out Lambin and Toby Gardenhire to end the inning.

Hacker returned to the hill in the sixth inning. He walked his first batter and hit the second. Rochester called Kyle Waldrop out of the pen to relieve Hacker, who gave up three runs on four hits, walking two and striking out three in his five innings of work. Waldrop struck out his first batter and got the second to hit into a force out which advanced the runner to third base. A fielding error by Lambin allowed one run to score and back-to-back singles allowed another two runs to score giving the Indians a 7-3 lead.

Chuck James came in to relieve Waldrop in the eighth inning. James faced four batters, giving up one hit and striking two out.

In the eighth, Rochester picked up two runs on a groundout by Gardenhire and Holm's RBI double.

NOTES: Saturday's day/night doubleheader will mark the 3rd consecutive season Rochester has played a Day/Night DH at Frontier Field and 4th overall since the stadium opened in 1997. Each day/night doubleheader has had a nice little story line. In 2005, Rochester played a morning/night DH vs. Ottawa on August 9 which featured (IL
Rookie of the Year) LHP Francisco Liriano pitching the 9:35 a.m. game and infielder Luis Maza hitting a walk-off 3-run HR in the 11th inning in the night game (Wings swept Lynx 7-3 & 7-4 (11)). On July 5, 2009 outfielder Jason Pridie went 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBI to rally Rochester from a 5-3 deficit in the day game to defeat Buffalo 9-5 (Wings split with Bisons W 9-5 & L 5-0). On May 19, 2010 Washington Nationals RHP Stephen Strasburg pitch the night game for Syracuse in front of 12,590 fans, which is the 8th largest regular season crowd in Frontier Field history (Chiefs swept Wings 8-5 & 5-1)...RHP Joe Nathan will begin a Major League rehab assignment with Rochester today. Nathan was 1-1 with a 7.63 ERA in 17 games with the Twins before being placed on the disabled list retroactive to May 24 with a right flexor muscle strain. Nathan will be in uniform for the night game of this day/night doubleheader.

This Day in IL Baseball History: June 19,1985 – MacArthur Stadium in Syracuse plays host to the longest game in Chiefs history. The marathon with Pawtucket lasts for 27 innings, with a total time of 7 hours and 7 minutes. Syracuse dents the plate once in the bottom of the 3 rd, but the PawSox answer in the 7 th. The game continues long into the night tied at 1-1, with both teams squandering countless chances to win it. Finally with two outs in the top of the 27 th frame, center fielder Ed Jurak delivers a bases loaded single to put Pawtucket ahead 3-1. Jim Dorsey, who came on in the 24 th, closes the door on the Chiefs to end the game.
