Report: Braves' Marksberry out of coma

Gwinnett lefty, 26, suffered seizure, collapsed lung during procedure
October 21, 2016

Braves Minor League left-hander Matt Marksberry awoke from a coma Thursday following a seizure at an Orlando hospital earlier this week, according to a report.

Marksberry, a 26-year-old reliever, was in a medically induced coma after he had a seizure and suffered a collapsed lung during a procedure Tuesday, according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution. AJC.com said the Triple-A pitcher had been dealing with stomach pains for a week and was undergoing a colonoscopy when the complications arose.

A statement from the Braves said Marksberry was suffering from "severe dehydration" after Marksberry himself tweeted Monday that he was ill and seeking prayers.

"I don't want to sound selfish but I really could use some prayers for my health right now," he wrote. "Non baseball related. Thank you guys."

Marksberry's brother, Ethan, said Wednesday that his brother was on life support, according to AJC.com. Marksberry's parents also flew in from Ohio, and his sister, Bridget, wrote on Facebook that the Cincinnati native "is starting to wake up. He still has a long journey ahead of him."

Marksberry spent most of the 2016 season at Triple-A Gwinnett, finishing 4-2 with a 2.32 ERA across two levels. He also appeared in four Major League games with Atlanta, where he allowed two runs on five hits over 3 1/3 innings. The lefty made his Major League debut in July 2015 and has appeared in 35 career Major League games.

Teams and players tweeted their thoughts and best wishes for Marksberry as the news spread.
