Honeywell deals again for Javelinas

Brent Honeywell is in a groove.

The Rays' second-ranked prospect delivered his second straight scoreless start on Saturday, scattering three hits and striking out three over three innings before Peoria fell to Mesa, 4-3, in an Arizona Fall League matinee.

Honeywell's AFL stint got off to a rocky start as the right-hander surrendered eight runs on five hits, including three homers, over 4 1/3 innings in his first two starts for the Javelinas. The 21-year-old has righted the ship, having tossed four one-hit frames on Monday against Salt River.

On Saturday, Honeywell worked around leadoff singles in the first and second innings before setting down the side in order in the third. The outing extended his AFL scoreless streak to seven innings and marked the second straight start in which he did not issue a walk.

The Georgia native has begun to look more like the pitcher who went 7-3 with a 2.34 ERA and 117 strikeouts over 115 1/3 innings across two levels during the regular season en route to being named the Rays' Minor League Pitcher of the Year.

Padres outfielder Franchy Cordero homered for Peoria, while Mariners No. 2 prospect Tyler O'Neill doubled and singled.

Indians No. 19 prospect Greg Allen stayed hot for Mesa as he swatted his third homer in two days, a game-tying solo shot in the fifth. The 23-year-old outfielder is hitting .366 with three homers and eight RBIs in 11 games for the Solar Sox.

Mesa won after ninth-ranked Indians prospect Yu-Cheng scored on a wild pitch by Thyago Vieira (0-1) in the bottom of the eighth to snap a 3-3 tie.

Blue Jays left-hander Matt Dermody (1-0) gave up one hit and fanned two over two scoreless innings to get the win.
