Alguacil joins San Francisco Giants as first base coach
Jose Alguacil is continuing his journey West.
In 2015, the affable Venezuelan-born baseball lifer was named the manager of the San Francisco Giants' Double-A affiliate, the Richmond Squirrels.
One year later, "Augi" made the jump to Triple-A and was named the manager for your Sacramento River Cats.
One more year, one more move. It was announced this morning that Augi would join the coaching staff in San Francisco, serving as the Giants first base coach starting with the 2017 season.
Augi is entering his 11th season in the Giants organization. He spent six seasons (1993-98) as an infielder in the farm system and returned to the organization in 2007 to work as a roving instructor until he joined Richmond in 2015.
The Giants also named former Reno Aces manager Phil Nevin as their third base coach. Both additions were announced Monday morning by club Senior Vice President and General Manager Bobby Evans.
"We are very pleased to add both Jose and Phil to the Major League coaching staff. They are well-respected and will serve in key roles for us," said Evans. "They bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to Bochy's staff, and we look forward to having them on the Major League club."
Nevin has spent the past three seasons as the skipper for the Triple-A Reno Aces, (Diamondbacks affiliate). Nevin was named the second manager in Aces history in November 2013 and in his first year in Reno he led the Aces to a PCL-best 81-63 record and a berth in the PCL championship series. Nevin guided the Aces to a 76-68 (.528) record this past season, good for second place in the PCL Pacific Northern Division.
Minor League managers also serve as their teams' third base coach, so both Nevin and Augi bring experience to the position.
With the appointment of Alguacil and Nevin, Bruce Bochy has completed the coaching staff for his 11th season with the Giants. They join holdovers Ron Wotus (bench coach), Dave Righetti (pitching coach), Mark Gardner (bullpen coach), Hensley Meulens (hitting coach) and Steve Decker (assistant hitting coach).
With the promotion of Alguacil, the River Cats are looking at their fourth manager in as many seasons.
