TO WORLD TEAM FOR 2011 FUTURES' ALL-STAR GAME!
New Britain, CT - Major League Baseball today announced the names of a handful of elite players who have been invited to perform in the 2011 Futures Game and a member of the New Britain Rock Cats - RHP Liam Hendriks - is among those international All-Stars selected to participate.
Sponsored by XM Satellite Radio, the All-Star Futures Game is intended to display the skills of the best Major League prospects from the United States and various other countries across the globe. This year's Game - the 13th annual - will take place on Sunday, July 10th at Chase Field in Phoenix, AZ. The 2011 site is the home turf of the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Liam Hendriks is a 22-year-old native of Perth, Australia and, as such, will suit up for the World Team when it squares off next month with the USA Team. The 6'1"/201-pound hurler was selected to participate in 2010 as well, but an untimely appendectomy prevented him from appearing in the international showcase staged in Anaheim, CA. The Rock Cats' OF Ben Revere performed there for the USA squad last year.
The determined Hendriks, ranked by Baseball America as the Minnesota Twins #6 overall Prospect in 2011, has been one of the top winners in the Eastern League this year. In his Double-A debut season, the Aussie is 7-2 with a 2.81 ERA over 77 total Innings of work. While not overpowering, he is known for his command of several pitches - his K/BB ratio is currently 70/16 - and tenacity on the mound.
He was signed out of Sacred Heart College (AUS) by Minnesota as a Non-Drafted Free Agent in 2007.
