OF Kelly Dugan signs minor league contract with Arizona

November 22, 2016

HAVE A SEAT, KELLY

Last Friday - amidst their many 40-man roster changes - the Arizona Diamondbacks signed OF Kelly Dugan to a minor league contract. He was assigned to Reno following the move.

Arizona will be Dugan's third different organization after being selected in the second round of the 2009 MLB June Amateur Draft by the Philadelphia Phillies. He reached Triple-A Lehigh Valley in 2015, but struggled with a .221 clip in 36 games for the IronPigs. Following seven years in the Philly system, Dugan signed a minor league deal with the Chicago Cubs last offseason, eventually spending the entire 2016 season at Double-A with the Tennessee Smokies in the Southern League.

Dugan, 26, bats left-handed and throws right, and is coming off a bounce-back season. In 2013, he belted a career-high 20 home runs in 112 games between Single-A Advanced Clearwater and Double-A Reading, but saw his power numbers decline to the tune of eight long balls in 159 games spanning the 2014-15 seasons.

Fortunately, Dugan rediscovered his power stroke in 2016. He ripped 13 home runs in 96 games, including this pinch-hit blast below.

With the likely departure of OF Todd Glaesmann to free agency, the D-backs were looking for Glaesmann's AA/AAA replacement. They may have found their man in Dugan.

We can already hear the sounds of "Duuuuuuuuuuuuuu" when Kelly steps to the plate at Greater Nevada Field in 2017.
