Mural honoring Trinity Gay completed
Family and friends of Trinity Gay attended a ceremony at Whitaker Bank Ballpark Friday morning to recognize the completion of a mural that honors Gay, who died in a shooting October 16 in Lexington.
The mural, which includes a 40-foot depiction of Gay, a track athlete at Lafayette High School and the daughter of Olympian Tyson Gay, is on an outside wall at the ballpark. A message, "Pass the Baton," is also part of the mural, in reference to Trinity's participation in track and also to spread awareness about the issue of gun violence.
"I went to school with Tyson Gay," said artist Dani Greene, who attended Lafayette High and the University of Kentucky. "My own relationship with Lafayette was important. Trinity had dreams and goals, and she wasn't doing anything wrong. This is about the betterment of the community, and to bring awareness to the problem that we have. I kept having moments when I would say, 'I've got to do this.'"
"It all starts with being good neighbors," said Legends President/CEO Andy Shea. "We're very honored. The fact that someone as talented and selfess as Dani approached us about partnering and using our wall not only as a memorial, but to bring unity and peace as well makes us feel very fortunate to be part of this."
