Dubon, Shaw Traded to Brewers

Brewers reliever Tyler Thornburg moves to Boston in four-player deal
December 6, 2016

The Hot Stove portion of baseball's offseason is underway, and the Boston Red Sox have acquired relief pitcher Tyler Thornburg from the Milwaukee Brewers in a four-player trade.

The Red Sox will send three players to Milwaukee, including Drive alums Mauricio Dubon (2015) and Travis Shaw (2011) as well as Josh Pennington.

Dubon was a South Atlantic League All-Star for the Drive in 2015 after hitting .301 with four homers, 29 RBI and 18 stolen bases in 58 games, which earned him a promotion to Salem following the All-Star Break.

In 2016, Dubon played in Salem and AA-Portland and shined at both levels, combining to hit .323 with six homers, 69 RBI and 30 steals. He was rewarded with a trip to the Arizona Fall League this offseason.

Shaw played in two games with the Drive after being selected in the ninth round of the 2011 Draft, going 3-9 at the plate.

He made his major league debut with the Red Sox in 2015, and he spent the entirety of the 2016 season in Boston, where he cracked 16 homers and drove in 71 runs to go with 34 doubles and a .242 batting average.

Pennington posted a 2.86 ERA in 13 starts with short-season Lowell in 2016, and he was a candidate to spend the 2017 season in the Drive's starting rotation.

Thornburg adds a dominant piece to the Red Sox bullpen, as the right-hander saved 13 games for the Brewers in 2016 to go with an 8-5 record, a 2.15 ERA and 90 strikeouts in just 67 innings.
