Mariners Name LumberKings '17 Coaching Staff
CLINTON, IA (Dec. 19, 2016) - The Seattle Mariners, parent club of the Clinton LumberKings, have named their Minor League coaching staffs for the 2017 season. Pat Shine will manage the club; Doug Mathis will be the team's pitching coach, David Flores the hitting coach, James Lofton the field coach, Lyle Danley will serve as the team's trainer, and Paul Howey will be the performance coach.
Shine, 45, comes to Clinton after spending the 2016 season in the Major Leagues as the video coordinator for the Miami Marlins. Shine's primary in-game duties included instant replay challenges but fans probably remember him best for being the pitcher for home-run derby champion Giancarlo Stanton in this year's MLB All-Star Game in San Diego.Shine will become the 41st manager in team history. This will be his first Minor League managerial assignment.
Mathis, 33, is a former professional pitcher who ended his professional career in 2015 after pitching in Korea, Japan, China, and the US. He spent parts of three seasons at the Major League level with the Texas Rangers before becoming a coach.
Flores, 30, had a four year professional career after being drafted by the Houston Astros in the 18th round of the 2008 MLB draft. He reached the Double-A level with Corpus Christi, but did not have a stop in the Midwest League during his playing days. Both Mathis and Flores are in their first year in the Mariners organization.
The LumberKings were also happy to see 2016 manager Mitch Canham and pitching coach Pete Woodworth be promoted to the high-A Modesto Nuts.
