Clay Buchholz Traded to Phillies

Right-hander was first Drive alum to reach the major leagues
December 20, 2016

The Greenville Drive's first ever major leaguer is on the move, as right-handed pitcher Clay Buchholz has been traded from the Boston Red Sox to the Philadelphia Phillies.

Buchholz was a member of the first ever Greenville Drive team in 2006, and he went 9-4 with a 2.62 ERA in 21 starts with the Drive that season while striking out 117 batters in 103 innings. His outstanding season was recognized by Drive fans, who selected him to the franchise's 10th anniversary team in 2015.

He rose quickly through the minor leagues, reaching the Red Sox in 2007, just two years after being drafted. He quickly made an impact, as on September 1st of that year, he fired a no-hitter in just his second career start.

The 31 year-old concludes a 10 year career with Boston that includes World Series championships in 2007 and 2013, as well as American League All-Star selections in 2010 and 2013. He posted an 81-61 record and a 3.96 ERA in 206 appearances, including 188 starts. His best season came in 2010, when he won 17 games with a 2.33 ERA and placed sixth in the American League Cy Young voting.

The Red Sox received minor league infielder Josh Tobias in return for Buchholz. Tobias spent most of the 2016 season with the Lakewood BlueClaws, where he hit .304 with seven homers in 93 games and was selected to the South Atlantic League All-Star Game.
