T-Yanks Win in Walk-Off
The scoring started early in the top of the first as Scooter Gennett singled and advanced to second on a ground out from Kentrail Davis. Hunter Morris and Khristopher Davis hit back-to-back singles to score Genett for a 1-0 lead.
In the top of the third, the Manatees added to their runs scored as Gennett singled again and advanced to second on a passed ball. Davis and Morris both singled again to score Gennett. Khristopher Davis followed with a double and both Kentrail Davis and Morris scored for a 4-0 lead. The T-Yanks quickly retaliated when Mitch Abeita after was hit by a pitch. Abe Almonte and Walter Ibarra both singled to load the bases. Zoilo Almonte doubled to score all three runners for a 4-3 game.
The hitting continued into the top of the fourth when Scott Kreiger singled, and Josh Prince doubled scoring Kreiger and advancing to third on the throw home. Gennett hit a sacrifice fly and Prince scored putting Brevard County up 6-3. Yankees catcher Mitch Abeita hit his first homerun of the season to inch the score closer 6-4 in the bottom half of the inning.
The Manatees would score their fifth and final run of the game in the top of the fifth as Khristopher Davis was hit by a pitch, stole second, advanced to third on a single from teammate D'Vontrey Richardson, and scored on a passed ball.
In the bottom of the eighth, Z. Almonte doubled, and scored when JR Murphy singled to tighten the score 7-5.
The T-Yanks bats came alive in the bottom of the ninth as Kelvin Castro singled, and went to third on a double from A. Almonte. Ibarra singled and both runners scored to tie the game at 7. Ibarra went to second on a throwing error, forcing the Manatees to call to the bullpen and bring in Jonathan Pokorny. After an Intentional walk to Z. Almonte, a double steal put Ibarra on third and Almonte on second. That set the table for Murphy, who hit a sacrifice fly to win the game 8-7.
The two teams will play game two of the series Sunday, July 3rd. The Tampa Yankees will be hosting a post-game fireworks extravaganza. The game will start at 6:30pm with the gates opening at 5:30pm.
