American Pride Apparent at Pohlman Field

July 4, 2011
BELOIT, WI - The Pohlman Field crowd showed up in great numbers today to celebrate the eve of Independence Day. With the largest crowd of the season at 3,059, the Snappers and Timber Rattlers opened up a three-game series. The teams battled back and forth all night as it was all capped off with a great fireworks show sponsored by the Rodeway Inn.

The Snappers (7-3) got their scoring started early after Wisconsin got a 1st inning run off of Beloit starter Adrian Salcedo. In the bottom half, Nate Roberts tripled to the right field corner to score Tyler Grimes who singled to get on base. Roberts later scored on a ground out by Michael Gonzales.

After a Timber Rattlers pitching change in the fifth, the Snappers would tack on two insurance runs to make the score 4-2 thanks to an RBI sac-fly from Tobias Streich and a Grimes RBI single to score Lance Ray.

However, the Timber Rattlers would come storming back in the eighth inning. Blayne Weller came in for Salcedo in the seventh inning with two outs to get a ground out to end the inning. When he began the eighth, it was a different story. T.J. Middelstaedt would begin the inning with an RBI double and would score when Nick Shaw hit an RBI single to center and advanced on the error Wang-Wei Lin.

They would tie the game when Cody Hawn roped a single to left to score Shaw to make it a 4-4 game. Jose Gonzalez would take the ball from Weller, and surrender a run of his own. In the ninth inning with one out, Franklin Romero, Jr. hit a ball to the right field corner that kicked toward the bullpens. By the time Ray had fielded the ball, Romero had already motored around the bases for a triple.

He later scored the game-winning run with Middelstaedt up to bat and a ball squeaked through the legs of catcher Tobias Streich. The Snappers would go down quietly in the bottom half going down in order.

Offensively, Tyler Grimes was the only Snappers with a multi-hit game (2-for-3, RBI). Nate Roberts' triple was his only hit (1-for-3, RBI) and Gonzales' RBI groundout was his only stat on the night as he was 0-for-4. Adrian Salcedo pitched well as he went 6 2/3 innings and allowed only one earned run on seven hits. He lowered his season ERA from 3.03 to 2.91.

The Timber Rattlers (5-5) had five players with multi-hit games including Cody Hawn who finished 2-for-4 with two RBI. Charly Bashara picked up his third win of the year as he pitched 1 1/3 inning and allowed only one hit.

The "Brodie Trophy Player of the Game" goes to Adrian Salcedo who gave the Snappers a chance to win with his 6 2/3 innings of one-run ball. He scattered seven hits and struck out three while walking two.
