Offensive Players of the Week
Jason Kipnis, Columbus
.500/.577/.955, 6 G, 11-for-22, 2B, 3 HR, 7 RBI, 8 R, 4 BB, 6 K, SB
After fellow highly touted Indians prospect Lonnie Chisenhall claimed this honor last week, Jason Kipnis burst into the spotlight with his own dynamite performance. The second baseman had multiple hits in each of his first three games of the week, homering Monday and going yard twice Tuesday. He went 3-for-4 with a walk, two RBIs and three runs scored Wednesday, and he doubled and knocked in two Thursday. He reached base four times Saturday, stealing a base and scoring twice.
Pacific Coast League
Kyle Blanks, Tucson
.520/.586/1.240, 6 G, 13-for-25, 3 2B, 0 3B, 5 HR, 15 RBI, 8 R, 4 BB, 6 K
Padres farmhand Kyle Blanks enters the new week with a 20-game hitting streak, and we're not talking 1-for-5 nights with cheap singles, either. Over Monday and Tuesday, Blanks went 4-for-7 with two homers, a double, four RBIs and four runs scored. He also walked three times in Monday's game. Blanks doubled and singled to plate three runs Friday, but the rest of the weekend made that performance look feeble. He had six hits -- three of them homers -- to collect eight RBIs and four runs scored over Saturday and Sunday.
Eastern League
Bill Rhinehart, Harrisburg
.480/.552/.840, 7 G, 12-for-25, 3 2B, 2 HR, 6 RBI, 9 R, 3 BB, 6 K)
Senators outfielder and designated hitter Bill Rhinehart got a famous new teammate on Monday when Bryce Harper joined Harrisburg. Rhinehart had two home runs as a greeting of sorts, and yet those two bombs didn't even count toward the week for which he is being named top EL player. All he did from June 27-July 3 was bat .480 with a couple of home runs and three more doubles. At the age of 26, the University of Arizona alum is hitting his stride as he is second in the Eastern League with a .597 slugging percentage that trails only Portland's Ching-Hsien Chiang.
Southern League
Neftali Soto, Carolina
.379/.438/.931, 7 G, 11-for-29, 4 2B, 4 HR, 10 RBI, 9 R, 3 BB, 10 K)
Mudcats first baseman Neftali Soto was an extra-base machine last week. No one in Minor League Baseball topped Soto's eight extra-base hits -- four doubles and four homers -- during the seven-day period. The 2007 third-rounder from Puerto Rico had an extra-base hit in every game but Saturday's. He had multiple hits in four of the seven games and multiple RBIs in four as well. A fan of numbers greater than one, Soto also had multiple strikeouts three different times, but that could not cloud his outstanding performance.
Texas League
J.D. Martinez, Corpus Christi
.476/.500/.857, 5 G, 10-for-21, 3 2B, 3B, HR, 8 RBI, 5 RS, BB, 2 K
J.D. Martinez knocked in a run in each of the week's games leading up to Sunday's, when he knocked in four. The Astros prospect doubled Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and he tripled Saturday and homered Sunday. He was 3-for-5 in Wednesday's action, which was one of four multiple-hit games for the outfielder. Martinez is hitting at a .350 clip over his last 10 games, which has boosted his average up to .331 on the season -- good for fourth in the Texas League.
California League
Dusty Coleman, Stockton
.458/.552/.833, 7 G, 11-for-24, 4 2B, 3B, HR, 8 RBI, 8 R, 5 BB, 6 K, 3 SB
Dusty Coleman was hitting .214 in the middle of June, and his hot end of the month lofted that average up to .241 in short order. He hasn't gone hitless since June 16, 14 games ago, and he's batting .404 since that streak began. When Coleman homered and doubled in Wednesday's tilt this week, it marked the fourth consecutive game in which the A's prospect collected an RBI. He singled, walked and scored a run the next day, and he doubled in each of his next two games. Over Saturday and Sunday, he plated four and stole a base. He enters the new week having scored at least one run in each of eight straight.
Carolina League
Bryce Brentz, Salem
.375/.464/.917, 6 G, 9-for-24, 2B, 4 HR, 8 RBI, 6 R, 4 BB, 7 K, SB
Bryce Brentz has only been in the Carolina League for 17 games, but he already has 15 RBIs and 12 runs scored at the new level. Swinging the bat like he did this week helps. He hit safely in every game, and the Red Sox prospect homered, singled and stole a base Wednesday and homered and doubled Thursday. He knocked in four and crossed the base three times himself in those two games alone, and after quietly singling and walking Friday, he was back at it, homering on Saturday and again on Sunday.
Florida State League
Jarek Cunningham, Bradenton
.333/.429/.833, 7 G, 8-for-24, 3 2B, 3 HR, 10 RBI, 5 R, 3 BB, 6 K
Jarek Cunningham entered Tuesday's game in an 0-for-11 rut, but he forcefully shook off that skid by doubling in two runs that day. He was a brand new man Wednesday, homering, doubling and walking to earn five RBIs and two runs scored. He went yard again Thursday and went 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored Friday. The Bucs prospect, who was a Florida State League All-Star this year, capped the stellar week with another longball in Sunday's game.
Midwest League
Jairo Perez, Beloit
.538/.613/1.000, 7 G, 14-for-26, 3 2B, 3 HR, 10 RBI, 7 R, 4 BB, 6 K, SB, 3 CS
Twins prospect Jairo Perez made his Class A debut just 22 games ago, but he's been right at home, hitting .410 since his first game and seemingly getting hotter by the minute. He hit his third Midwest League home run Monday, and he'd club two more by the time the week was done. He was 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI on Tuesday and homered in the course of banging out three more hits Wednesday. Friday brought another three-hit game, in which he missed the cycle by a triple. He had two hits, a walk, a stolen base, an RBI and a run scored over the rest of the weekend.
South Atlantic League
Edward Salcedo, Rome
.407/.467/.889, 7 G, 11-for-27, 5 2B, 3B, 2 HR, 6 RBI, 9 R, 3 BB, 2 K, SB
There aren't many ways to kick off a week that are more impressive than what Edward Salcedo did Monday. The Braves prospect homered twice and doubled twice during a 5-for-5, five-runs-scored master class in hitting. He singled, stole a base and came around to score in his next game, and he doubled in each of his next three tilts. On Saturday, he finally got the triple he needed to complete Monday's cycle, and he knocked in two runs and scored twice that day.
New York-Penn League
Travis Shaw, Lowell
.409/.480/.955, 6 G, 9-for-22, 3 2B, 3 HR, 8 RBI, 7 RS, 3 BB, 8 K
Travis Shaw, whom the Red Sox plucked from Kent State with their ninth-round choice this year, is getting along just fine in pro ball. Shaw went yard in each of his first two games this week, combining for three runs scored. He singled and scored the next day. A two-strikeout, 0-for-3 Friday didn't exactly crush his confidence at the dish. He came back with an outlandish five-RBI Saturday, going 4-for-4 with a homer and three doubles, scoring three runs and walking twice. He added another RBI with a two-hit Sunday.
Northwest League
Cory Spangenberg, Eugene
.407/.556/.519, 7 G, 11-for-27, 3 2B, 6 RBI, 9 RS, 9 BB, 4 K, SB
Cory Spangenberg has opened the season gangbusters, claiming the Northwest League Player of the Week award in each of the first two chances. The Padres' first-rounder boasts a ridiculous .560 on-base percentage through his first 60 professional at-bats, and opposing pitchers should almost be grateful if a base-on-balls is all he manages. His run of six consecutive games with exactly two hits came to an end Thursday, but he doubled and scored twice in that game. After an 0-for-2 Friday (in which he walked three times, stole a base and scored), he got back to his old habits, notching two hits in each of the next two games.
Appalachian League
Art Charles, Bluefield
.310/.394/.897, 7 G, 9-for-29, 3 2B, 3B, 4 HR, 10 RBI, 9 RS, 3 BB, 8 K, SB
Blue Jays prospect Art Charles homered twice for three RBIs Monday, and he doubled twice and scored twice Tuesday. The 20th-round pick from the 2010 Draft homered again Wednesday, also stealing his first Appy League base in that game. An 0-for-4 Thursday was forgotten with a 3-for-5, three-RBI Friday, and an 0-for-3 Saturday was likewise washed away with Charles' sixth home run Sunday, which tied him for the most in the circuit.
Pioneer League
Rosell Herrera, Casper
.444/.516/.815, 7 G, 12-for-27, 2 3B, 2 HR, 8 RBI, 7 RS, 4 BB, 3 K
Playing in the States for the first time, Rosell Herrera isn't showing any signs of culture shock. He's hitting .380 for the Ghosts, and he haunted his fair share of opposing pitchers this week. The Rockies prospect clubbed his first Pioneer League longball while going 3-for-4 on Tuesday, and he singled twice and scored two runs Friday and tripled twice Saturday. On Sunday, the Dominican prospect put up four RBIs, homering again during a 3-for-6 game in which he also scored twice.
