In addition to leading the league in home runs, Hinze paces the circuit in on-base percentage (.461) and walks (70). He also ranks third in the league in slugging percentage (.626), fourth in RBIs (70), and tied for 5th in extra base hits (41). Hinze was one of two JetHawks selected for the 2011 California League/Carolina League All-Star Game and he won the Home Run Derby at the All-Star Game, besting sluggers from both leagues. He has earned California League Player-of-the-Week honors twice this season (May 30-June 5 and June 13-19).
Hinze signed with Astros as a non-drafted free agent in 2007 following a two-year career at Angelina College, a junior college in Lufkin, Texas. He earned All-American honors following his sophomore season in 2007 when he hit 15 home runs and collected 61 RBIs. Hinze still holds several school records including the single-season batting average (.458) and home run marks (15) and the career RBI record (98).
