Giants Rally Late in 3-2 Win vs. Nuts
Mike Marbry (4-2) suffered the loss after allowing two hits and one run in the final inning. He allowed a leadoff double to Ehire Adrianza, walked Jarrett Parker and saw Tommy Joseph single to third to load the bases in the inning. Adrianza then scored the winning run after tagging on Burg's sac fly to left.
Joseph originally showed bunt before pulling back and chopping his single to third. Third baseman Nolan Arenado broke in after the ball and shortstop Josh Rutledge broke for third to help cover third on the play. The ball bounced over Arenado, but Rutledge was there to field it behind him. He had appeared to catch the grounder while stepping on third before Adrianza reached, but base umpire Jeremiah Faleafnu determined that Adrianza was safe. Modesto (40-44) Manager Jerry Weinstein argued the call and was ejected from the game.
San Jose (55-28) stranded three in the first, but managed to load the bases again in the second and score the game's first run. Dan Perkins started for the Nuts and would allow just one run over five innings. He worked out of the bases loaded jam in the first, but would throw a bases loaded wild pitch in the second to allow Tyler LaTorre to score.
Chuck Lofgren started for San Jose and was perfect through the first three innings of the game. He stayed in for the fourth and would face five batters in the inning. Angelys Nina reached on an error, but was quickly removed from the bases when Arenado hit into a force out. The inning continued with Kent Matthes reaching on a walk and Kiel Roling popping out.
Lofgren walked one, struck out three and pitched four scoreless innings while holding the 1-0 lead. Andy Reichard was then brought in out of the bullpen and would lose the one run advantage. He started his appearance by giving up a leadoff double to Josh Rutledge and a single to Jared Clark. A sacrifice bunt from Jose Gonzalez squeezed in Rutledge from third and the Nuts tied the game. Clark moved to second on the bunt and advanced to third on a single from David Christensen. Scott Robinson then grounded into a force out that took Christensen off the bases, but Clark scored the go-ahead after Robinson beat the throw to first.
Perkins held the 2-1 lead through the fifth, but reliever Leuris Gomez lost it in the sixth. He started his inning with a strikeout, but then gave up a single to Burg. LaTorre then singled to center and a two-out single to right from James Simmons plated Burg from second to tie the game. Matthes made a strong throw home after fielding the ball on one hop in right, but Burg slid around the tag.
Gomez allowed just one run and four hits while suffering his first blown save of the season. He also struck out two in the inning.
Coty Woods relieved Gomez in the seventh and would strand one inherited runner. Woods gave up one hit, walked one and struck out one in his appearance.
Ari Ronick pitched the ninth for San Jose and would keep the Nuts scoreless and without a hit in the final inning.
San Jose stranded three in the first, one in the second and 13 total runners on base in the victory. They were 3-for-14 with runners in scoring position.
The Nuts were 2-for-5 with runners in scoring position and left five on base.
The victory gave the Giants a 2-1 series win and came during the final regular season meeting between the two clubs.
