Zambrano Earns No Decision in Rehab Start

Peoria allows three runs in 10th for 4-1 loss
July 8, 2011
Peoria, IL - Chicago Cubs' right-hander Carlos Zambrano pitched four innings in a rehab assignment on Friday night as the Peoria Chiefs fell 4-1 to the Beloit Snappers. Zambrano allowed just an unearned run on three hits with three walks and four strikeouts in a no-decision in front of 5,610 fans. With the loss, Peoria falls to 5-10 in the second half and has dropped each of its last three series.

Richard Jones helped the Chiefs grab an early lead in the bottom of the first following a perfect performance from the plate just one night before. Matt Szczur led off with a single to center and moved to second when Rubi Silva groundout out. Following a Greg Rohan strikeout, Jones made it 1-0 with a RBI double deep into the right-center against righty Adrian Salcedo.

Beloit threatened for the first time in the top of the second against the right-handed Zambrano. Michael Gonzales lined a leadoff single into right field and Lance Ray walked, but Chiefs' shortstop Elliot Soto made a tremendous scoop on Andrew Leer's groundball to begin a 6-4-3 inning-ending double play.

The Snappers broke through in the third for their first run with the help of a Chiefs' error. Tobias Streich drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on a Daniel Santana sac bunt, and traveled to third when Arismendy Alcantara committed a fielding error at second. With runners on the corners, Adam Bryant made Peoria pay for the mishap with a RBI groundout that evened the game.

The game stayed tied through the next five innings despite several scoring opportunities. Soto made it to third in the fourth and the Snappers got Jairo Perez to third in the sixth frame, but both threats were ended by groundouts. In the bottom of the eighth, Rohan drew a leadoff walk and Gibbs reached on a fielding error by shortstop Tyler Grimes that sent Rohan to third. With one gone and Soto at the plate, Rohan was caught between third and home on an unsuccessful squeeze play and Gibbs moved to third on a throwing error by reliever Clinton Dempster. Soto struck out swinging to end the scoring chance.

Andrew Leer led off the 10th inning with a single to right and moved to second on a sac bunt. Santana sent a ground ball to Alcantara at second. Alcantara was unable to make a clean throw to first for the out and Leer scored for a 2-1 lead. With Santana at second and one out, Lin lined a RBI single to center for a 3-1 ballgame and Bryant tacked on the final run with a RBI base hit to left.

Zambrano allowed one unearned run on three hits in four innings. He walked three and struck out four in the no decision. Su-Min Jung allowed just one hit in four innings and also walked four batters. Levitt (0-1) pitched two innings and suffered the loss. He allowed three runs on four hits with one walk and three strikeouts.

Casey's General Store Player of the Game - Su-Min Jung (RHP) - Jung allowed just one hit and no runs in four innings of relief work. He walked four in his scoreless outing and did not record a strikeout.
