Aaron Hill joins Giants on Minor League deal
The San Francisco Giants agreed to a Minor League deal with veteran Aaron Hill this morning, as first reported by Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (Twitter). The 34-year-old infielder will meet the Giants in Arizona to compete for a reserve role with the Giants.
A long-time second baseman for the Arizona Diamondbacks, Hill returns to the National League West after spending the 2016 season with both the Milwaukee Brewers and Boston Red Sox. He hit .262 in 125 games while playing mostly third base. For his career, Hill is a .267 hitter.
While Hill has spent most of his career at second, he has logged 141 games at the hot corner since the start of 2015. With Joe Panik a near-lock to be the everyday second baseman in San Francisco, Hill is looking at a potential reserve role. His ability to play both second and third could make him a valuable bench player, backing up Panik and Eduardo Nunez, who is expected to start at third for San Francisco.
Hill joins the ever-growing list of veteran infielders signed to Minor League deals, joining Jimmy Rollins, Kyle Blanks, and Gordon Beckham. If he doesn't land a role with the big club, Hill could split time at second and third for the Sacramento River Cats.
