Matt Shoemaker Wins Second TL Weekly Award

July 11, 2011
NORTH LITTLE ROCK - Arkansas Travelers right hander Matt Shoemaker has been named the Texas League Pitcher of the Week for July 4-10. It's the second time in a month that the Trenton, Michigan native picked up the league's weekly pitcher's award. In his only start of the week Shoemaker dealt a two-hit gem in a 5-0 victory, his first career nine-inning complete-game shutout.

Shoemaker won his seventh straight decision on Friday, retiring all but five batters without allowing a runner to third base. He held Midland to two singles and picked off Adam Heether after allowing a bloop single in the first inning. With two walks and five strikeouts on Friday, Shoemaker has 80 strikeouts against 16 walks in 86.2 innings with the Travelers.

Shoemaker's gem was the Travs' first nine-inning complete game shutout since Tyler Chatwood threw a three-hitter at ONEOK Field in Tulsa on July 16, 2010.

With Friday's whitewash, Shoemaker's two shutouts tie him for the lead in shutouts amongst all pitchers in Minor League Baseball. His 2.60 ERA ranks lowest in the Texas League, while teammate Garrett Richards ties Shoemaker with the lowest batting average allowed in the TL at .224.
