IronBirds Fall Late, Lose to Lake Monsters 8-2 in 14
Aberdeen, MD - The Aberdeen IronBirds fell in 14 innings to the Vermont Lake Monsters by a final score of 8-2 on Thursday night.
Aberdeen took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Joe Velleggia singled in Martin Serrata. Vermont tied the game in the top of the second. Chris Affinito led off with a walk and then was batted home on an Aaron Shipman RBI single.
The IronBirds took the lead in the bottom of the sixth. After Wynston Sawyer led off with a double, Austin Knight hit a bunt single that moved Sawyer to third. Kyle Hoppy then came up and hit a deep sacrifice fly that was able to score Sawyer, making it 2-1 Aberdeen.
Vermont tied the game in the ninth. Sean Jamieson worked a bases loaded walk off of Enrico Jimenez and, after Aberdeen could not score in the bottom of the ninth, the game went to extra innings.
The score remained tied until the top of the 14th. Orlando Alfonso came on to pitch the inning, but allowed six runs, all earned, and that made the final score 8-2.
Alfonso took the loss, falling to 0-1. Jeff Urlab picked up the win in relief, improving to 1-0.
The rubber match of this three game series will begin at 7:05 p.m. tomorrow. Trent Howard (1-1, 3.24) will start for Aberdeen. Brent Powers (0-1, 3.71) will go for Vermont.
