Casper Wells homers twice; Hens still fall 9-2
The Mud Hens fell to the Durham Bulls, 9-2, on Saturday night. Casper Wells went 3-4 with two home runs and two RBI. RHP Thad Weber (5-7) took the loss after giving up four runs (three earned) in 6.1 innings of work.
Wells put the Hens (46-56) up 1-0 in the second with a solo bomb. The Bulls (57-43) leapt ahead in the bottom of the second with a two-run triple. Durham went ahead 3-1 in the third after scoring a run on a passed ball.
Wells brought the Hens within a run, in the sixth, with a homer to dead center field. The home run was Wells' second of the game. Unfortunately, the game slipped away from the Hens in the seventh. Durham plated five in the seventh to take an 8-2 lead. The Bulls got the scoring started in the seventh on a RBI single. Durham then plated four more runs on a two-run double and a two-run single. Durham tacked on one final run in the eighth to extend their lead to 9-2 when Brandon Guyer grounded into a run scoring double play.
The Mud Hens and the Bulls lock horns again on Sunday at 7:05 p.m. The Hens return to Fifth Third Field for an eight-game homestand against the Norfolk Tides and the Syracuse Chiefs from July 26-August 2.
