Kiger's blast propels Hounds

Mark Kiger's first-inning grand slam sent Midland on the way to a 15-5 victory over Springfield on Saturday at CitiBank Ballpark.

Kiger, a 25-year-old shortstop, also doubled twice and collected five RBIs to lead the RockHounds' 13-hit attack.

Jeremy Brown and Kevin Melillo each contributed a hit and three RBIs for Midland, which scored all of its runs over three innings. Brian Stavisky doubled in two and Andre Ethier and Adam Morrissey drove in one apiece.

In his third game with Midland, starter Shane Komine (1-0) yielded three runs on four hits, striking out six and walking three over six innings.

Travis Hanson knocked in three runs for the Cardinals with a groundout in the first and a two-run homer in the eighth. Rick Ankiel slammed a leadoff blast in the sixth and Aaron Herr delivered an RBI single.

Starter Chris Lambert (2-6) absorbed the loss after surrendering six runs on four hits with four walks and a strikeout over 1 2/3 frames. --Marissa Rega/MLB.com
