Añeja rivalidad en playoffs, Puebla vs Diablos
De acuerdo al sistema de competencia de la Liga Mexicana de Béisbol, el primer lugar de la Zona Norte recibe al cuarto en los dos primeros juegos de postemporada, en una serie a ganar cuatro de siete posibles.
De esta forma, El México, que se llevó el sitio de honor de su división con record de 63-40 en ganados y perdidos, recibirá en el Infierno Solar el sábado 30 y domingo 31 de julio a los Pericos de Puebla, que ocuparon el cuarto lugar de la zona norte.
Las historia de confrontaciones entre Puebla y Diablos Rojos en juegos de playoff inicia en 1974, cuando ambas novenas se enfrentaron en la primera ronda, ganando la Pandilla Roja 4-2 esa primera serie, para enfilarse al campeonato, ya que después se enfrentó a los Charros de Jalisco venciéndolos 4-2 y en la serie de campeonato, pasaron por encima de Gómez Palacio en cuatro juegos.
Para 1975 y 76 se volvieron a enfrentar la novena de la Angélopolis y Diablos Rojos, ganando El México ambas series cuatro juegos por dos y en la series de postemporada de 1976, nuevamente el México se llevo el gallardete de la Liga Mexicana, venciendo en la final al conjunto de Torreón.
Pasó una década para que los escarlata y Puebla, ahora como Ángeles Negros, se enfrentaran en playoffs y los rivales naturales de los Diablos se llevaran la serie 4-2, resultando el equipo campeón de la LMB en 1986 el equipo de la Angelópolis.
Fue hasta el 2003 cuando volvieron a coincidir en postemporada, en una serie que se fue al límite y que El México ganó tinto en sangre 4-3, para enfilarse rumbo a la conquista del campeonato, venciendo posteriormente a Sultanes de Monterrey y a Tigres, cuando el equipo felino jugaba en Puebla.
En total, Puebla y Diablos se han enfrentado en postemporada en 31 ocasiones, con 18 triunfos para los pingos por 13 de los Pericos, en cinco series de playoff que han disputado ambas novenas, El México ha logrado avanzar a la siguiente ronda en cuatro por una de Puebla.
En la presente temporada, Pericos y Diablos Rojos se han enfrentado en un total de 10 ocasiones con ocho triunfos para la Pandilla Escarlata por dos de Puebla.
La serie será a ganar cuatro de siete juegos posibles, los cuales se jugarán de la siguiente manera:
