Rizzo heating up again at Triple-A
Rizzo continued his recent tear with two hits and four more RBIs on Wednesday, but the Triple-A Padres were beaten by the visiting Colorado Springs Sky Sox, 9-5.
After going 1-for-12 with eight strikeouts in his first three games following a demotion from big leagues, Rizzo is 9-for-12 with 10 RBIs in his last three contests.
Against Colorado Springs, the 21-year-old first baseman homered for the third straight contest, launching a three-run blast off Edgar Gonzalez (4-3) in the fourth inning. He helped chase the Sky Sox starter with an RBI single in the sixth.
Reliever Sean White wanted no part of Rizzo, walking him on four pitches in the seventh.
A key component in the offseason trade that sent Adrian Gonzalez to the Red Sox, Rizzo batted just .143 in 35 games in the Majors before the Padres decided to give him a little more seasoning. He's hitting .371 at the Triple-A level and would be leading the Pacific Coast League if he had enough plate appearances to qualify for the batting title. He also would be first in on-base percentage (.449) and slugging (.732).
Batting ahead of Rizzo, Steve Tolleson went 3-for-3 with a triple, a walk, an RBI and two runs scored in Tucson's third straight loss.
Ryan Rohlinger homered, tripled, walked twice, drove in three runs and scored three times to lead Colorado Springs, which has won nine of its last 11 games.
