Spinners End Trip on Positive Note

Lowell pounds 14 hits in 11-7 slugfest victory
August 14, 2011
JAMESTOWN, NY - Every Lowell Spinner starter had a hit and Hunter Cervenka picked up his first win of the season with six strong innings of relief out of the bullpen as the Spinners took the rubber game of their three-game set with the Jamestown Jammers, 11-7, on Sunday afternoon.

For the Spinners, it completed the longest road trip of the season, in which the team went 2-6.

Lowell (23-33) wasted no time taking control of this contest, sending nine men to the plate in the top of the first and scoring four runs, the highlight being a three-run blast by Matt Marquis, his third home run with the Spinners since joining the team on August 6th.

The Spinners used the long ball in the second to build a comfortable lead, as rehabbing Portland Sea Dogs member Reynaldo Rodriguez hit a laser beam over the left field wall, a two-run homer that scored Jose Garcia.

In the fourth, Travis Shaw lifted his second sacrifice fly of the game to left field to push the Spinners ahead by seven before Jamestown (29-28) began to chip away. The Jammers scored four runs on just one hit in the bottom half of the inning, aided by a two-run error by Garcia as a double play groundball skipped right through his legs, and a second two-run error as he airmailed a throw over to first baseman Boss Moanaroa on a grounder to short.

Lowell pushed across a run in the sixth inning as Moanaroa singled in Garcia, but the Jammers continued to threaten, scoring two runs in the seventh on a solo homerun by catcher Jobduan Morales and an RBI single by third baseman Joshua Adams.

However, Moanaroa and Tim Roberson, who had come into the game in the place of starter Jayson Hernandez, both knocked in runs with RBI singles in the eighth and Moanaroa had his third RBI single of the game in the ninth to put the game out of reach.

Lowell starter Jason Garcia only was charged with one earned run, but was denied his fourth victory of the season as he struggled with his control, walking four in three innings. Cervenka (1-6, 6.00) worked out of a jam in the fourth inning and then battled throughout the game to preserve the lead, striking out three for his first win of 2011.

Moanaroa and Roberson each had three-hit games to pace another strong offensive performance by the Spinners, while Marquis and Moanaroa each had three RBI. In the three games in Jamestown, the offense hit a robust .348 with 11 extra-base hits.

The Spinners now enjoy a couple of days off as LeLacheur Park plays host to the 7th Annual New York-Penn League All-Star Game Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. When the team picks up the tail end of the schedule, they will be hosting the Batavia Muckdogs, the Class A Affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals, during Breast Cancer Awareness Night, sponsored by Saints Medical Center on Wednesday night.
