Powell, Nats thump Warthogs

Win snaps three-game skid, halts Hogs five-game win streak

Brandon Powell homered and drove in three runs to lead visiting Potomac to a 12-6 win over Winston-Salem on Tuesday.

Trailing after five frames, 4-3, the Nationals (9-6) scored nine runs in the final three frames to snap a three-game losing streak. Steve Mortimer had a two-run single in the sixth, and Powell smacked a three-RBI homer in the seventh. Martin Lowrance added a two-run double in the eighth.

Dee Brown had four hits and scored three times for Potomac.

Aaron Cunningham was 3-for-4 for the Warthogs (10-6), doubling and scoring in the first, singling and scoring in the second and driving in two with a double in the sixth.

Nationals starter Craig Stammen allowed four runs on eight hits without issuing a walk, fanning four in five innings. Jack Spradlin (1-0) allowed two runs on two hits and a walk, striking out two.

Starter Clayton Richard allowed three runs -- two earned -- on four hits and one walk in five innings, striking out three for Winston-Salem. Carlos Torres (0-1) took the loss, allowing four runs on two hits and three walks in 1 1/3 innings.
