Orioles Sign First Round Pick Bundy

August 16, 2011
With just minutes to spare before the Monday night deadline to sign draft picks, the Baltimore Orioles agreed to terms with 2011 First Round Draft Pick Dylan Bundy. The right-handed pitcher's deal is a five-year Major League contract that includes a $4 million signing bonus and begins in 2012

Dylan was drafted by the Orioles out of Owasso High School in Oklahoma and he is the younger brother of right-handed pitcher Robert Bundy, who was drafted by the Orioles in the eighth round of the 2008 first year player draft and is currently a starter for the Bowie Baysox.

He was considered to be one of the top high school pitching prospects in the draft, as he throws three above-average pitches. He throws a fastball that touches 98 mph and sits at 95 mph and complements it with two good breaking pitches. Bundy went 11-0 with a 0.20 ERA and 158 strikeouts in 71.0 innings for Owasso his senior year.

The Orioles also signed second round draft pick Jason Esposito and sixth round draft pick Nick Delmonico on Monday, meaning the team was able to sign all 10 of their top draft picks. In total, Baltimore signed 22 of their 50 draft picks.

Seven of the Orioles top 10 picks were pitchers and all seven of them agreed to contracts prior to Monday's deadline. Right-handed pitcher Mike Wright was drafted by the Orioles in the third round out of East Carolina University and received a $363,000 signing bonus. Right-handed pitcher Kyle Simon was the Orioles fourth round pick out of the University of Arizona and he received a $231,100 signing bonus.

Among the top fielders signed by the Orioles were Esposito and Delmonico. A third baseman, Esposito was drafted out of Vanderbilt University and received a $600,000 signing bonus. Also a third baseman, Delmonico was drafted out of Farragut high school in Tennessee and received a $1.5 million signing bonus.

The only local player drafted by the Orioles who signed a contract was 10th round pick Philip Wilson, a right-handed pitcher out of the University of Virginia.

Orioles 12th round draft pick Jason Coats, a left fielder out of Texas Christian University, was the highest draft pick not to sign a contract. The Orioles drafted two players out of the John Carroll School in Bel Air, Md., but neither Kevin Hockaday (14th round) or Brendan Butler (50th round), signed with the team. Right-handed pitcher Sander Beck, the Orioles 33rd round selection out of the University of Maryland, also did not sign with the team.
