Christian Lopez to Toss First Pitch Friday
Yankees fan caught Derek Jeter's 3,000 hit home run ball
NORWICH, CT - The Connecticut Tigers are proud to announce that Christian Lopez, the 23-year-old New York Yankees fan that caught Derek Jeter's 3,000 hit ball, which was a homer, is set to visit Dodd Stadium and throw out the ceremonial first pitch before the Tigers game on Friday night against the Yankees Class A affiliate, the Staten Island Yankees.
Jeter became the 28th player in MLB history to reach the 3,000-hit plateau, after smashing a homer off of Tampa Bay Rays pitcher David Price on July 9. He is the first player in Yankees history to achieve the feat. Lopez gave up the opportunity to sell the ball and instead gave the ball right back to Jeter following the game. For the kind gesture the Yankees decided to give Lopez Derek Jeter-autographed bats, balls, and jerseys. They also threw in four Champions Suite season tickets for every remaining home game of the season, including the playoffs.
The Tigers want to use this unique opportunity to commend Lopez for his gesture that often is not seen in modern day sports. In addition to throwing out the first pitch (and getting to keep the ball), Christian will be on the concourse before the game to meet with fans and share his experience.
