Pitchers Duel Claimed by Sox

August 29, 2011
Scott Beerer snapped a 1-1 tie with an RBI double in the sixth inning and sent the Colorado Springs Sky Sox on to a 2-1 win over the Salt Lake Bees on Monday night. With two outs in the sixth, Salt Lake starter Bear Bay issued a two-out walk to Jordan Pacheco, who scored from first when Beerer drilled a 1-0 pitch into the left centerfield gap. The Bees had tied the game in the fifth on back-to-back doubles by Gil Velazquez and Cole Armstrong to open the inning, but Armstrong was left stranded at third.

Bay (8-10) was the tough luck losing pitcher, as he allowed just two runs on seven hits in five and two-third innings. Ryan Brasier, Jason Bulger and Michael Kohn came out of the bullpen and combined to throw three and one-third scoreless innings. Armstrong led the Bees with two hits and one run batted in. Efren Navarro singled in the second inning to extend his hitting streak to 11 games, but his eight-game streak with at least one extra base hit came to an end, as Salt Lake drops the club's sixth consecutive game.

"Those guys are out there trying their best to compete," said Bees manager Keith Johnson. "They are trying to succeed in those instances and when it's their opportunity to execute, they are giving us their best effort. It just hasn't been there consistently."
