Carlos Guillen has four hits but Hens drop epic twelve inning contest

The Indianapolis Indians defeated the Toledo Mud Hens 5-4 in an epic twelve inning game at Victory Field. Carlos Guillen had a very strong rehab game going 4-5 with two doubles, RBI, two runs, and a walk.

The top of the second inning began very promising for the Hens. After the first three batters reached base to load the bases, Danny Worth was able to lay off poorly located Aaron Thompson pitching to earn a RBI walk. However, Thompson held the Hens in check for the rest of the inning bearing down and getting next three batters out.

Toledo tacked on two more runs in the third. Leadoff hitter Will Rhymes started the inning with a leadoff single then stealing second. Next, Guillen lined a RBI double to right. Following a Ryan Strieby single to put runners on the corners, Worth drove in his second run of the game by a stroking a RBI single to center.

Indianapolis tied the game in the fourth. Former Mud Hen Gorkys Hernandez provided a two-run single while Pedro Ciriaco provided an RBI infield single.

The Indians' Jordy Mercer gave the hometown team the lead when smacked a deep solo home run over the left field wall.

The Hens battled back to tie the game in the eighth. Andy Dirks led the eighth off with a double. Then, Timo Perez pulled a RBI double down the line right field line that eventually rolled into the Toledo bullpen. The Indianapolis Indians manager Dean Treanor saw the play differently and was eventually ejected from the game for arguing the call.

After Timo tied the game in the eighth, the contest remained deadlocked all the way until the bottom of the twelth.

The Hens and the Indians will meet for one more time Wednesday at 1:05.

Game Notes

  • Carlos Guillen has picked up at least one hit in each of the last ten Triple-A games he has played in. That ties him with Argenis Diaz for the longest Hens hitting streak of the season.
  • Audy Ciriaco was the starting shortstop for the Mud Hens. His brother, Pedro Ciriaco was the Indians starting shortstop.
  • The time of game was 4:14.
