Red Sox Acquire Conor Jackson for Jason Rice
The Boston Red Sox announced that they acquired first baseman/outfielder Conor Jackson and cash considerations from the Oakland Athletics in exchange for minor league right-handed pitcher Jason Rice prior to Wednesday night's roster deadline. To make room on the 40-man roster, the club transferred right-handed pitcher Bobby Jenks to the 60-day disabled list.
The announcements were made by Executive Vice President/General Manager Theo Epstein.
The 29-year-old Jackson is batting .249 (83-for-33) with 17 doubles, one triple, four home runs and 38 RBI in 102 games with Oakland this season, including 50 appearances at first base (43 starts), 28 in right field (24 starts), 20 in left field (14 starts) and six at third base (2 starts). He is one of just two Major Leaguers this season to appear in at least five games at each of those four positions. The right-handed hitter was selected by Arizona in the first round (19th overall) of the 2003 First-Year Player Draft and has hit .272 (588-for-2,165) with 123 doubles, nine triples, 51 homers, 290 RBI and 250 walks in 646 career Major League games with the Diamondbacks (2005-10) and Athletics (2010-11).
Rice, 25, has appeared in 44 games with Triple-A Pawtucket this season, including one start, going 4-5 with four saves and a 3.69 ERA (35 ER/85.1 IP) while recording 89 strikeouts compared to 42 walks. Selected by the Red Sox from the White Sox in the Triple-A phase of the 2008 Rule 5 Draft, the right-hander has pitched in 256 minor league games (48 starts) between the Boston and Chicago systems, posting a 26-31 record with 24 saves and a 3.91 ERA (236 ER/543.0 IP).
Jenks, 30, has been on the disabled list since July 16 (retroactive to July 8) with left back tightness. He has appeared in 19 games out of the bullpen with Boston this year, including 13 scoreless outings, going 2-2 with a 6.32 ERA (11 ER/15.2 IP) and 17 strikeouts. Signed by the Red Sox as a free agent in December, Jenks has posted a 3.53 ERA (140 ER/357.1 IP) and 173 saves while going 16-20 in 348 career Major League appearances over parts of seven seasons with the White Sox (2005-10) and Red Sox (2011).
