Van Slyke Wins Batting Title

September 6, 2011
Lookouts 1B/OF Scott Van Slyke has won the Southern League batting title by finishing the season with a .348 clip. With this distinction, he becomes the fourteenth Lookout in the modern era (1976-current) to lead the Southern League in batting average.

Van Slyke hit above .300 during each month of the 2011 season, including a strong finish in which he hit a combined .430 during the months of August and September. Joey Votto, who hit .319 in 2006, was the last Lookout to win the batting title.

Additionally, Van Slyke led the Southern League with 45 doubles, which narrowly missed the Southern League record of 47 held jointly by Gabe Kapler and Robert Fick. Votto holds the Lookouts' modern era record with 46.

Lookouts OF Alfredo Silverio also finished the regular season as a leader in several categories. Most notably, he accrued 18 triples, which topped Ivan Calderon's former Lookouts' modern era record total of 15 set in 1983. Silverio just missed the Southern League record of 19 held by Alan Trammell.

Silverio also led the Southern League in total bases (289) and extra-base hits (76).

RHP Will Savage became the sixth Lookouts pitcher in the modern era to lead the Southern League in wins by finishing the season with 12. Most recently, Steve Kelly tied for the league lead in wins with 12 in 2004.

The Lookouts, winners of the North Division of the Southern League in the second half, will hit the road to play the Tennessee Smokies on Thursday, September 8th to play the Smokies in the first round of the Southern League Playoffs. After playing the first two games of the best-of-five series at Smokies Park, the Lookouts will return to AT&T Field on Saturday, September 10th to play their first home playoff game of the series. If necessary, games four and five, which would take place on September 11th and 12th, will also take place at AT&T Field. Tickets are currently on sale.
