Cougars Win Game One of the MWL Playoffs

GENEVA, IL- The Burlington Bees were held to just three hits as the Kane County Cougars earned a 4-0 win in game one of the best-of-three opening round playoff series before 880 fans at Elfstrom Stadium on Wednesday night.

The night belonged to both starting pitchers. RHP Blake Hassebrock (0-1) pitched six innings, allowing an unearned runs on one hit. He retired the first 11 hitters he faced on Wednesday and did not give up a hit until the fifth inning.

DH Jovan Pickett (0-2) led off the sixth inning for Kane County and got on base with a walk. He moved to second base on a passed ball and to third base on a sacrifice by 2B Angel Franco (0-3). A sacrifice fly by RF Geulin Beltre (1-3) allowed Pickett to score for a 1-0 lead.

Kane County starter Greg Billo (1-0) shut down the Bees' offense on Wednesday. He allowed no runs on three hits and struck out seven men.

The Cougars scored a run in the seventh inning on a double by SS Orlando Calixte (1-3) for a 2-0 lead.

In the eighth inning Franco led off with a walk and went to third base on a single by Beltre. Franco scored on a passed ball and Beltre moved to third base. LF Brian Fletcher (1-3) lifted a sacrifice fly to center field to score Beltre and make it 4-0.

The Bees and Kane County Cougars continue their three-game series with game two in Burlington on Thursday night. Burlington needs a win to save its season. It's a special "Thirsty Thursday" with 2 for $3.00 Pepsi specials and 2 for $4.50 specials on select beer. RHP Yordano Ventura (4-6, 4.27) gets the start for Kane County against RHP Josh Bowman (8-6, 3.55) for Burlington.
