Doubledays Earn Spot in Championship Series

September 10, 2011

Auburn, NY - Led by early offense, the Auburn Doubledays earned a spot in the New York-Penn League Championship Series with a 7-2 defeat of the Vermont Lake Monsters on Friday night.

The Doubledays now await their opponent, which will be decided on Saturday between Brooklyn and Staten Island. If Staten Island wins, the Doubledays will host the Yankees for game one of the series on Monday before playing in Staten Island on Tuesday and Wednesday. If Brooklyn wins, Auburn will travel to Brooklyn for game one before hosting games two and three.

Led by early offense, which scored seven runs in the game's first three innings, the Doubledays stormed over the Lake Monsters on Friday night. Auburn plated one in the first, three in the second, and three more in the third to take the 7-2 lead after three.

From there, the bullpen dominated. Alex Kreis, Tyler Hanks, Christian Meza, and Colin Bates combined to toss five and one-third of scoreless baseball, sending the Doubledays to their first league championship series appearance since 2007.

Offensively, the Doubledays were led by Carlos Alvarez at the plate, who went 3 for 5 with a triple and a run scored.

Auburn now awaits their next opponent, which will be decided on Sunday night in Staten Island. The Doubledays will play again on Monday, but their location is still unknown.
